The Benefits Of A Rest Day - You Are Not Doing Yourself A Favor By Pushing Play Every Day

Every workout program comes with a handy wall calender meant to help you get the full benefits of the moves. Most of these programs start you off rather gently in the first week, easing you into the key moves, steadily upping the length or intensity of the workouts as you get further into the routine. Whether the program is strength training or cardio based, there is one thing they all share: the rest day. Some programs may have more than one rest day per week, however they will all have at least one. Before you get the idea that you can just skip ahead to the next workout because you feel okay, pay attention. Rest days are on the calendar for a reason and it is a pretty important one.

When you work out, that is, if you are doing the program correctly and actually putting forth real effort, you create minor damage in your body. For instance, when you are lifting weights, you are tearing the muscle fibers. As the body repairs those tears the muscles get bigger or leaner. The body usually does most of these repairs during the down time (while you are asleep, for instance) but may not finish all of the repairs that quickly. The rest day allows that body part to be mended and to rebuild so that it is ready for the next workout. Certain body parts can handle some back to back exercise, however, there are other muscle groups that will benefit from being fully rested between workouts.

The rest day does not mean a day to lay on the sofa and eat bon-bons, however. Too many people take an all or nothing approach to fitness that is damaging to their results and their motivation. A rest day should be a day where you are not pushing yourself to the limits that you are working toward with your fitness program. If you are doing an all out, heavy duty, extreme training program, it is okay to take a gentle walk or do some extra yoga/stretching when the calendar says "rest day". If you are sore from the previous day though, it is also perfectly fine to just sit out that day and really give your body the chance to recover.

You may notice that as your fitness level improves, you won't need a full day of rest and recovery. In fact, your body will crave the movement. Just be gentle with yourself, this is the only body you are ever going to have!

Great article! Very good advice and interesting info...it does make sense that the body needs time to repair any damage done to the muscles while exercising. Otherwise, someone may end up quitting altogether if it gets too painful.
