The other day I was talking with a friend about how we go through periods in life where there is just way too much going on. For me, my energy is the first thing to go. Then usually follows the anxiety and sleepless nights. Then my brilliant friend went on to tell me of all the benefits she enjoys when she keeps up with her exercise. Go figure.
Now I don't have a gym membership or anything, and with taking care of my 16 month old toddler I don't have much time to spare, but I know that's no excuse to not get out there and get moving. In fact, one of the number one ways to stay in good health and keep energy levels up is simply a good brisk walk! And the thing is this is something just about everyone can do. We all need more than just a little motivation to get into a routine, but I've found that reviewing all the benefits that come from this simple, enjoyable activity really gets me back on track. So why is walking so great? What are the benefits?
You can sum up the benefits by saying they are physical, emotional, and mental. Some believe even spiritual! Yep, walking can greatly improve almost every aspect of your health. Some of the health related issues we deal with can be prevented, improved, or even resolved by as little as 30 minutes a day of brisk walking.
Just some of the physical benefits from walking that have been researched and studied include a healthier heart, better breathing, improved blood circulation, and a boosted immune system. Also included are the prevention and controlling of diabetes, osteoporosis, some cancers, and of course the major concern for many, the dreaded weight loss. All these benefits listed are impressive and to top it off walking is an exercise with minimum stress to the body, so just about anyone can do it without difficulty.
Another way walking improves health is mentally and emotionally. This is perhaps my biggest motivation to get out and walk because when I have a positive outlook I definitely feel more empowered, focused, and, well just happier! We've all heard how exercising causes the release of the "happy" chemicals called endorphins, thereby improving our mood. Walking also helps prevent and relieve symptoms of insomnia and we all know how much a good night's sleep does for us. Also, when we get moving the increased blood flow carries extra oxygen to the brain, causing improved mental function and clarity. Awesome, right! There are also various articles out there discussing the effect walking can have on boosting self esteem. I know how proud I feel when I accomplish or achieve a goal. What better goal to have than to take care of our well being!
A final thing to consider I suppose is how accessible and practical this activity is for just about anyone. You don't need to buy any fancy equipment or pay a membership. Just some comfy clothes, good shoes, and maybe a buddy to get out there with you and you're set! Also it is an exercise you can enjoy no matter what your fitness level. Easy enough!
So get out there! I'm saying this now to myself since I know I have a half an hour to spare this afternoon that I'll otherwise probably just use watching TV. Its really that simple. I'm taking that first step toward feeling better today and going for a walk. You care to join me?
It is such a great information especially for most people who desired to be healthy and well...like me. I like it! Thanks a lot, Ally!
