The honest answer is that the best way to get rid of belly fat is through understanding nutrition and adjusting your diet accordingly. As much as 80% of your fat loss success will come from what you are eating. The balance is driven by genetics to a small extent and your activity level.

But, to answer the specific question about the best exercises to do. Simply, the best exercises lose belly fat relatively quickly. But why?

Because the best exercise to reduce belly fat is an exercise using the large muscle groups and/or complex, full body movements.

Big muscles like the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes and lats burn more calories when engaged in exercise. So it stands to reason that if we want to maximize fat loss, we want to maximize calories burned through exercise.

No spot reducing allowed

Also understand that the best way to get rid of belly fat is the best way to get rid of any fat. You cannot spot reduce belly fat or thigh fat or any specific area fat. You gain fat throughout your body and you lose it the same way.

Now if most of your excess fat is belly fat then you should see results in this area quickly. But it is better to think about overall body fat loss than specific area fat loss.

You might be surprised because it has nothing to do with abdominal or stomach exercises. No sit ups or twisting moves or core work at all. Why?

Again, the best exercises lose belly fat fast. And fast means burning a lot of calories. And high energy consumption means utilizing large muscle groups and /or full body movements.

So the number one exercise to reduce belly fat is:

The Squat. It can be a bodyweight squat for reps or adding some weight with a barbell or dumbbells. Squats hit the large leg and butt muscles and consume a lot of calories. Vary the foot stance to change the intensity of exercise to different parts of the leg. A closer stance will hit the quads harder while opening up the stance will move the stress to the glutes and hamstrings.

Some other squat variations are lunges and split squats. These are also excellent movements to add to your repertoire. Basically hit the lower body hard for exercise to reduce belly fat. And all fat for that matter.

Some other best exercises

Lose Belly Fat with a full body workout doing The Thruster. A Thruster combines a squat with a press. So if you are using dumbbells (and they don’t have to be very heavy), hold the bells at shoulder height and drop down into your squat. As you push up out of the squatting position, press the weights overhead. And then repeat. It’s a killer.

The Thruster may actually be the best exercise to reduce belly fat.

Any big muscle movement will do it. Hit it hard 2 days a week with a third day running sprints and you are burning fat.

So, what is the best way to burn belly fat? Proper nutrition first but exercise the large muscles to maximize calories burned.

Burn the legs. Burn the fat.
