The Workout Wars: Why Companies Are Engaging In Bad Behavior to Get Your Business

It has been said before and will be said time and time again: the fitness industry brings in billions of dollars every year. People exercise for a wide variety of reasons. Some because they have to, some because they like it and some because they have nothing better to do. So, with that many people and this many types of exercise, why are there so many companies that are perfectly willing to run down their competition? If yours is the "best" shouldn't you be able to stand on your merits alone rather than climbing up the backs of others? Apparently not.

Without naming names it is still fairly obvious to those in the know who are the worst culprits of this. In fact, the business is built not only on its products but drones that they send out to recruit new followers of their programs, often from other brands. That's right. If you like a workout and you go to the company's Facebook page, it is likely that eventually someone from one of these "others" will try to lure you away. They start as cheerleaders and then they try to become your friend. If they fail at that, they will come back with another tactic, blatant advertising. They do it on your personal Facebook pages. They do it on public forums. They may get booted from some of these sites for their nonsense but rest assured they will be back, usually in much stronger numbers. Kill one and it regenerates and then duplicates like a swarm of zombies.

It is not just the other fitness programs that they attack. They attack food products- blasting messages through every social media site they are on warning you that you are going to die "right now" if you eat this. Heaven forbid that you post a "bad" meal on your own accounts if you are friends with one of these people. It is their job, no, their personal mission in life to make you feel horrible about that choice, guilty that you are setting this terrible example for the people around you and ready to do whatever it takes to make the changes in your life, even if that means buying their overpriced vitamins, meal replacement shakes and their recommended exercise programs.

Not everyone will respond to these tactics- and that is part of the problem. As an adult, being admonished by a stranger for sipping a soda is not only frustrating it can trigger feelings of utter defiance. And it's not that they care so much about your health, at least not as much as they pretend to. They are doing it for the business, for the dollars and that seems to be a very unhealthy motivator for a "health" industry business.
