To Run Or Not to Run: Why Does it Have to Be the Question?

The experts are pretty divided on the topic of running. For some, there is nothing better than a good run to ease stress, gain focus and to lose weight. For others, running is the killer of knees and other joints, the cause of injuries and often the reason so many people end up couch bound after a fairly active youth. If you try to suggest that there is a middle ground to these groups of people is to suggest that you can breathe underwater without equipment. They won't believe you.

Running enthusiasts try to talk to their friends about their passion, often in terms reserved only for the sport. They talk about distances in terms of times, so asking them how long it would take to make a short errand usually sounds like a math problem gone horribly awry. They try to drag reluctant friends and family members out for their runs as well, often finding doors closed in their faces and text messages left unanswered in an effort to just make the running offers stop. They don't stop there though, these runners. They talk about shoes and running shorts and the best sports bra to prevent nipple bleeding. If those last two words did not make you shriek like a fifth grader, then you might actually like running.

There are the running newbies, the people who have been convinced (usually by an enthusiast) that running is the only way to peel off those last ten pounds and to get back to better health. They go to the store and buy the recommended shoes at a price that made the room go dark for more than a few seconds and the other items. They cue up the suggested running playlist and off they go, loathing every plodding step they take. It will get better, the enthusiasts say, just keep going. And so, they try to keep on running but every day they make it no farther than they did the day before and every day they hate running (and their running fan friend) just a little more.

Running is not for everyone. That should just be a given. There are plenty of other ways to lose weight or to gain health without ever running. If you like to run, then run. If you hate running, then don't run. It sounds like a simple plan. Find something that makes you happy and do that instead. Life is too short to worry about traffic, expensive shoes and the horrors of bloody nipples.

Amie, I never have, nor will I like running as a hobby. I outgrew it. If I go anywhere by bi-ped it is usually at a pace to my choosing. My daughters are both in the military so are required to run for physical fitness tests, so they must practice. When they visit me here at home the subject of running shoes and sports bras becomes a topic of discussion, I take it as my cue to leave them to their conversations. lol

I am going to run a 5k after I am cleared for training after a minor surgery. I may try for a 10 k later, but I am not a running fan!
