Today We Kill A Myth: Say it Now, I Will Not Get Bulky If I Lift Weights

Ah, the voice of the myth that will not die, perpetuated by silly, vapid trainers who obviously know nothing about human biology and physiology or at least not enough not to swallow their own bull. Here is the myth: women who lift weights will get bulky and big like a man and will lose all their feminine curves in the process. Now, here is the truth of that: the average woman is not going to become manly from their strength training routine even if they are lifting some pretty big weights. So, put down the dainty pink, two pound dumbbells ladies and let's just kill a myth once and for all.

First of all, let's define the terms here. An average woman is just that, the women you are likely to see at your local gym, dropping their kids off at school or working in the offices and other places right beside you. A non-typical woman or the competitive body building woman is not average because she takes a body that she was given genetically and then manipulates it through strict diet and hours upon hours in the gym. The average woman does not have the testosterone levels to get big and bulky all over like a competitor, however, she might have some areas where she does hold weight a bit more than other people. For many women, that is the hips and thigh area which simply means they pull back on the number of squats and lunges they do and they avoid doing anything that is meant to build the quads. That does not mean they should not strength train.

In addition to helping the body stay trim and tight, the act of building muscle speeds up your fat burning furnace so that you are speeding through your calories every day. Muscle even burns calories when it is at rest! But aside from how your body looks or feels, strength training gives you some very serious benefits including some protection from bone weakening in older age. Weight bearing exercises, including weight lifting protects against osteoporosis, especially in women who fall into the highest risk category for that condition.

The myth will live on as long as women will believe it. But, look who is telling you these tales- trainers who want you to do hours and hours of cardio and salesmen who want to sell you meal replacement shakes or supplements. The myth will live as long as someone, somewhere will believe it. Pick up the dumbbells ladies, you won't get bulky.
