Weight Loss Basics Stay the Same

Popular diets everywhere from Hollywood to celebrity doctors are once again splashing across magazine covers. Warm weather is looming ahead and going on a diet will be a priority for many. It’s interesting to see what new ideas about losing weight and dieting are on the magazine racks at the grocery store. Diet plans are configured in every way imaginable. Some are based on counting calories, others are into carbohydrates. These are relatively simple compared to the more complicated ones.

Choosing a diet can certainly be confusing. Which ones are best? And which of them really work? Would you like to lose weight and not have to worry about the mechanics of a diet? You can, by applying the common sense advice of some of the earlier fitness experts.

Jack Lalanne was television’s first fitness guru. Back in the 1960’s, there was no diet and exercise craze like there is now. But Jack Lalanne had a popular show where he encouraged people to exercise with him as he preached the benefits of exercise on the human body. He had a great physique. Naturally, he believed in good nutrition and eating right (though he always put exercise above nutrition). But he told his viewers that losing weight and keeping it off was all a matter of arithmetic. He believed in burning off calories with exercise.

The simple fact is that all diets restrict calories and that’s how the weight is lost. It really comes down to personal preference when choosing a diet. But in that case we should choose a diet plan that suits us. It is not necessary to pick one that requires lots of study and inconvenience. For example, people who count carbohydrates and plan their meals around how many carbohydrates they are going to consume are not losing weight because the carbohydrates have been limited. It is the calories that they are limiting from their diet that causes the weight loss.

Most of us already know the basics of eating right. Even if some of us wouldn’t know how many calories or carbohydrates were in the meal we just ate, we know good nutrition from bad. With all the information being beamed at us today from television and the internet it’s easy to learn a lot about eating right even if by accident.

So take a relaxed approach to your diet plan this spring. Choose one that’s right for you. And remember, it’s all a matter of arithmetic.
