Although Muay Thai classes are common in NYC, not all of them are the same. Few schools have prestige in several areas such as how they train, the quality of the center in which you're learning, the approach to the style in which the classes teach you as well as their reputation. But finding a good muay thai school in NYC isn't really a hard task. So rather than looking up different places in your area, I'll give you guys a few places you can try checking out!
Place #1: Firstly there is Andersons Martial Arts Academy, a school which I personally attend. It teaches you not only muay thai, but many other arts (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA, Kali) and blends them together. Although separate classes in muay thai are available, students have diversity in choosing what it is they wish to learn.
This school has a good reputation because of it's trainer/s. It's head trainer, Dan Anderson is well known in the self defense world, having trained CIA & DEA agents, as well as noted celebrities such as Milla Jolovich from Resident Evil.
In regards to kickboxing classes, there are held on a daily basis. Students in this school get a wide & diverse understanding of the sport, with elements of not only Thai boxing being used in training, but Savate (French Kickboxing) the Denmark style as well as Jeet Kune Do concepts.
Finally before moving onto the next school, there is also access to training seminars with famous fighters from different arts such as Dan Inosanto, Alistair Overeem, Saekson Janjira & many more.
Long story short, this school has great benefits. It will make you sweat, but more importantly, they teach effective muay thai. The other arts are optional, but if a good muay thai class is what you're looking for, this is one of the few places that meets the standard (full schedule). They also offer a free introductory lesson.
Place #2: Five point academy. This school offers muay thai classes in a comfortable center. In addition to those classes, it also teaches other arts such as kali (weapons based) & judo. Classes are offered on a daily basis, with day/night classes available depending on your schedule. I'm not really sure if they offer a free introductory lesson. You would have to check with them to find out.
There are others, but these are probably the most popular. Both schools are located in downtown Manhattan. Both are great, but my preference is leaned towards Andersons due to their open minded approach to muay thai. It's all about evolution and development and this school teaches you that.
