Why Exercise Doesn\'t Have to Be A Bad Word Any More

Exercise is one of those words that is either said with utter disgust or utter joy. Very few people can discuss the topic from a neutral standpoint for some reason. Exercise is important but for more reasons than you might think. Sure, it is a useful tool to getting and staying fit but exercise is also important for bone health, mental health and even mood. Study after study have proven that exercise can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety but it is often not brought up as a solution during diagnosis. How can people shake their negative feelings about exercise? That might depend on what they see as exercise.

Too many people see exercise as grueling hours spent in a sweaty gym or slogging along to a workout DVD that they hate. They might try running or jogging when walking is really more their speed. Finding the right exercise is part of the key to sticking with it but also to enjoying what you are doing as well. Exercise should still get your heart pumping but that does not mean that you can't have fun. In fact, the more that you enjoy the type of exercise you picked, the more likely that you are to stick with it.

Figure out what some possible options are for you. If you like to work out in groups or with friends, then look for a nearby gym or studio and see what the offerings are. If you prefer to workout alone or with just one other person, there are a lot of activities and DVD based programs that you can choose from. There are even free workout programs for every interest and fitness level online. But, and this is what might come as a huge surprise, you don't have to use a program at all. In fact, you might be doing more exercise than you give yourself credit for already.

Think of the fun things that you have done as a child and then do them again. Who says that you are too old to swing at the park? Swinging works your core muscles as you stabilize yourself as well as your leg muscles as you pump to go higher and higher. Pull back with the arms and you work the upper body as well. Pass out squirt guns to a group of friends and then chase each other around the yard for a few hours. Walk the dog around the block a few times or take him to the dog park and toss a ball for him. Find something that you enjoy and you will do it.
