Why Sitting on Your Butt is Making You Skinny Fat

Are you aware of the people who are so against exercise of any kind that they would rather starve themselves "healthy" and "fit" rather than put in even a few minutes at a gym, on a treadmill or even on a walk around the block? If so, you might want to sit them down and have a little chat with them. Start with this shocking information: if you have managed to lose weight without exercise at all, you are not "healthy". You are not "fit". You are more than likely what the health care experts refer to as "skinny fat". And, because you look okay from the outside, you might be at a more serious risk for health problems than other groups.

According to several studies, the people who are visibly overweight may deny their weight, may pretend that it does not exist but it still is there as a visual reminder to their doctors. On the other hand, the skinny fat people are technically at a normal weight and might look okay so the doctors may simply assume that things are also okay on the inside as well. A MRI scan might reveal that these skinny fat people are actually holding a lot of fat around their internal organs where it is the most dangerous. This skinny fat phenomenon has been noted even among super models- easily among the thinnest people around.

It is important for people to realize what an incredible disservice they are doing to their body by not exercising at all. Sure, they need to cut calories to lose weight but they should also be working on getting more exercise so that they are toning their muscles and making sure that fat does not settle inside of their bodies. People who do not exercise adequately are also at a higher risk of losing lean muscle tone, leaving them flabby and misshapen but also increasing their risk for injuries as they get older.

To put the whole "skinny fat" into perspective: during an interview, a trainer mentioned that Gwyneth Paltrow's body was a "mess", shapeless, flabby and just not pleasant under her expensive, designer clothing. Paltrow has never been accused of having a weight problem so most people would be shocked by those words.

Exercise can be as simple as walking around your neighborhood or in the local mall. It can be something more serious. It does not take starvation to get you to your goal weight. It is important to stop paying attention to the scale as the only measure of your health. Fat fat is dangerous but skinny fat is just as dangerous as well.
