Exercise is always a good thing because it helps build a strong healthy body. It creates flexibility, endurance, and muscle strength, muscle mass if you so choose, and contributes to a body’s overall health. One of the ways to achieve these things through exercise is by using hand free weights or dumbbells. Though you should never rely on free weights alone, there are a number of reasons why using hand free weights is indeed good for you.
For instance, flexibility is achieved through hand free weights usage because they encourage the muscles to stretch and stretching almost always causes increased flexibility. The weights also cause the range of motion to increase, especially when being used while walking, and increased range of motion means greater flexibility as well.
Along with greater flexibility comes greater muscle strength and endurance. As with any form of exercise, the more you do it, the longer you are able to endure doing it without becoming worn out. As the endurance increases, so does the muscle strength and as the strength of the muscles increase, so does the amount of weight that can be lifted or supported with those muscles. Hand free weights allow you to accomplish this with ease.
Of course, increasing these things also increases muscle mass. Any sort of weight training will aid in increasing muscle mass if that is the goal and if that is not the goal, using hand free weights will help tone the arms so that the muscles are beautifully sculpted and toned but won’t jiggle whenever the arm is waved. Whether toning or increasing muscle mass it simply depends on how the hand free weights are being utilized and whether more reps than sets are being done.
There are more than 30 different exercises to perform and even more variations of those with hand free weights so that you are able to give your entire body a full workout, giving you more balance, range of motion, flexibility and strength.
No matter how they are utilized, as long as the hand free weights are being used correctly there can be nothing but positive benefits. To ensure that they are being used correctly, follow all of the recommended safety precautions. Also, be sure that the correct weight for the experience level is being used. Using a weight that is too heavy can cause injury and using a weight that is too light will not achieve the desired effect. Keep these things in mind and using hand free weights should be a breeze.
You are right about the effects with free weights. That is why it is part of my workout. It helps build stability and proper form when compared towards bench press and squat rack. Good article.
I find that I have become more flexible, but I am not quite sure if its because I use my free weights or is it my resistance/strength training that I do 2-3 times a week on my Bowflex home gym, but I have to tell you, its trying to keep up a routine. Very trying. Thanks for the comment Terrell.
