Why Work Out at Home?

You might be asking yourself: Why work out at home instead of joining a local fitness club? Why are people getting fitness DVDs and basic workout equipment and not going to the gym anymore like they used to?

There seems to be a trend to working out more naturally and without too much unnecessary machinery around it. I've been mostly working out at home for a couple of years now and I can positively say that I haven't really found any major shortcomings when compared to a gym membership.

I'll give you the main 5 reasons why I believe you should consider working out at home instead of going to a commercial gym:

#1 Save a lot of money

This might be the top reason for most people. When you sign up for a gym membership you are usually committing yourself to a long-term relationship that will leave you spending somewhere between $300,00 to $1500,00 each year. In five years that would be between $1.500 and $7.500. That's a lot of money!

Ok, you might have to buy some basic form of equipment to exercise at home. But firstly it will be way less than you think. And secondly: That's a one time investment and you'll even be able to get most of your money back should you ever decide to not use your equipment anymore and sell it on ebay or craigslist. Try that with a gym membership.

#2 Save time

If you're not one of the lucky people that have a gym right by their doorstep you will have to add some 10-30 minutes travel time to each one of your workouts. And that't probably just one way. Then how about finding an available parking spot? By the time you've driven to and from the gym and parked your car both ways, your home workout would probably already be done!

But that's not even it. For most people it makes the most sense to go to the gym right after work: Hello peak hour! This results in a lot of waiting for the most popular machines, unnecessarily cooling your body down and ultimately robbing you of your motivation.

#3 No more excuses

Besides the time and money factors, a lack of motivation is probably the reason that keeps most people from regularly going to the gym.

When it comes to working out we are all the greatest inventors of excuses:

  • Too cold/rainy/hot/whatever today
  • Don't feel like seeing this or that person at the gym
  • The car needs gas
  • Not looking good enough for the general public today
  • Someone has to watch the kids
  • The dog ate my homework
  • And so on..

But most of these don't really work when your gym is in your basement. Working out at home is a real excuse killer.

#4 The atmosphere

Many people don't like the atmosphere of commercial gyms. And I say: I know what you're talking about.

At home you ..

  • .. can workout in your kind of privacy and at any time you wish
  • .. don't have to listen to unwanted criticism by fellow members
  • .. don't have to take part in the ever growing fashion show that about any sport has become
  • .. do your stuff without listening to the grunting and groaning of wife-beater wearing and heavily sweating jocks
  • .. can listen to the music you like at the volume you need
  • .. can open a window an breathe in actual oxygen for a change
  • .. have no one to impress and can concentrate on really working out

How is that for a better atmosphere?

#5 Less planning, more convenience

Most of the workout programs you can buy on a DVD for example have a pretty well thought out workout plan spanning over a couple of months. There are usually somewhere around 5 to 15 different workouts changing back and forth so you don't get bored with the ones you already know.

Most DVD sets even include a diet plan guiding you through the different phases of their program.

That way you don't have to keep track of what you did last time and don't always have to figure out what to do next. There's always your virtual private trainer waiting for you when you press "Play". Sure.. you'll still have to do all the hard work yourself. But you can stop worrying about when to do what and how.

..of course it can make sense for some people to join a commercial gym. Be it the social aspect, the explicitly having to leave the house or the need for a spotter at really high amounts of weights.

But for most of the regular to somewhat advanced workouts your own place will be more than good enough to get fit at home. And you'll need way less equipment than you think! You should really give it a try and see if you can still justify spending hundreds of dollars a year for something you don't really need.
