Workout Motivation Suggestions Part 1

Having the idea to workout is easy.  Looking for workouts to do is easy. Signing up for a gym is easy. Keeping up with your workout is a little tougher.  If you have ever felt the workout rut, then you know exactly what I'm talking about.  It's difficult to be motivated with so many other better things to do such as going out for happy hour, watching tv, going to the movies.  Anything BUT sweating it out in a stuffy overcrowded gym with a guy (or girl) next to you who smells like they haven't showered in days.  (At least this kind of stuff happens to me.)  However, I have gotten myself out of this rut a few times without needing to spend money on a personal trainer.

Workout Motivation #1: As you all know, misery loves company.  Why don't you get a friend involved?  There are a couple ways to make this interesting.  First option is to make a bet.  Get a group going if you can. Let's say you have a group of five people. Each person put in $50 and promises to work out four times a week.  Yes, this is the honor system, so choose friends that you would trust.  At the end of 6 weeks, count how many times each person missed and whoever missed the least gets the pot.  Money is always a good motivation.  Another variation that I tried with my best friend is to award a prize for each month's milestone.  After the first month, there would be a $5 gift that you give each other. After the second, $10; third, $20, etc.  My friend was living across the country at the time so we would send it through the mail. That way, each person gets to open something fun in the mail! They weren't just some generic gifts either. These gifts had to do with fitness or workout equipment to keep it all going. I can go into more detail about this in another article.

Workout Motivation #2: Spend a little money on new workout clothes or shoes. I guarantee that you will want to show off that new cute top or badass shorts while you workout. I recently bought a new pair of those running sneakers that are supposed to tone the calves just to see if it lives up to the hype. So in order for me to test it out, of course I had to run with them!  I would have to say that after 5 miles of running/walking in them, they seemed to tone my calves.  I also like spending time at the mall especially when I have a gift card to spend.  Usually I would get these $10 Kohl's card in the mail and my purchase would usually end up being around $2 for a new workout top or shorts.

Workout Motivation #3: Do outdoor sports and activities. You will forget all about "working out" because you will be having fun and burning calories at the same time! I recently picked up soccer with a group of friends. During the summer, I like to go on hikes and get a tan.  And during the winter, I enjoy skiing and snowboarding, which by the way, really burns some major calories.

Pick a system that works for you.  I'm sure everyone is different and everyone's workout motivation is different also.  These are just suggestions.  I have more that I can offer at a later time, perhaps when you get un-motivated again.
