The domesticated cats and dogs, sometimes friends, but mostly enemies, who's the boss? Now this is not including the domesticated lions of some owners, soon food for their pets at some future time. The answer, the dog, or so I would like to believe.
Most dogs chase cats, seldom seen, cats chasing dogs, unless the dog is far smaller than the cat, and then the chance is good that even a chicken will chase that dog. Why is it then, in the wild undomesticated species of dogs and cats, the cats will chase the dogs and the dogs will run for their lives. Have you been charged by a lion, leopard or tiger? The chances are your answer is no, don't blame the dogs, would you not take to the hills?
The domesticated dog species are bigger and stronger than the cats, from Great Danes to Toy Poms domesticated to act initially, as watch dogs and workers, and secondly as pets. Dogs are workers, trained to herd sheep and cattle, to aid their owner so that he, being lazy, can rest. Have you ever seen a cat leading a blind person?Cats, not trainable, they became the pet for kissing and cuddling, pampered and stroked by all that they allowed. They're in the house, because they do not like getting dirty, dogs the opposite, are left outside. These two house animals where once friends, until the dog became clever and became jealous, of the preferential treatment allowed the cat.
When the cat comes outside the dog chases it, why? To try to get it dirty, it will then be banished to an outside life, he can then cuddle the cat at night and keep warm. Cats gained intelligence and agility, which enabled them to outrun and outwit the dog, only succeeding in antagonising him more. The cat, gaining height up a tree, heard tormenting the dog, we hear “meow”, the dog hears “you are so slow and stupid, you could not even get close to me.” The dog replies with “come on down you excuse for an animal, and let me show you who's boss!” we hear “woof woof”
In the wild there are only a few cats and dogs, the cats, Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, and Tigers, the dogs, Wild dogs, Hyenas (a dog of sorts), Jackal, Wolves and Coyotes. When last was one of the dog types seen lifting it's leg against a tree in front of a lion? Just before it became the lion's next meal! The cats of the wild, bigger, more aggressive, and stronger than the wild dog species.
There is good footage on the web, of packs of Hyenas chasing single Lions, but when the tables levelled, one on one, none of the dogs stands a chance against the cats, except possibly for the cheetah. The cheetah, being more like the domesticated cats, has the speed and tenacity to outrun any other dog or cat, I wonder, is this not cowardliness?
How the tables have turned, domestication or evolution “that is the question”.
Great article, I am amazed by the wild animals like the hyenas as compared to dogs. Thank you
thanks William, the hyenas is actually not of the dog family but for my article I lumped him there, closer to a dog than a cat.
