Ferret Bathing Methods

There are several options for bathing your fuzzy. By trying a few you'll discover the one your ferret prefers and finds the least stressful (for you both).

One method utilizes a tub partially filled with water another involves bathing your ferret under a running faucet. Of course, if your ferret is one you must peel off your head as soon as a faucet is turned on, faucet baths should be avoided.

The kitchen sink affords a convenient place for bathing ferrets; most are large enough to accommodate a bathing pan. A spray attachment can be handy too. A plastic dish pan or a clean large litter pan makes an excellent ferret bathtub. The ferret tub can also sit on the countertop, provided added height and comfort for you. A bathroom sink may also be used, but these are not usually as easy to work with because they are typically not as large as kitchen sinks.

Keep a close eye on your ferret during the entire bathing process and be sure your pet cannot slip off the countertop. Ferrets should never be left unattended during a bath.

Another convenient method is bathing your ferret directly under a running faucet or using a spray nozzle on your pet. Make sure the water temperature is appropriate before getting your fuzzy wet. Begin by holding your ferret in your arms and speaking softly while gently turning on the water. After your ferret becomes accustomed to the sound, proceed slowly, without making sudden movements. If your ferret seems afraid, try using the tub method described previously.

Many ferret owners opt to bathe their pets in a bathtub. This can be more awkward, however, compared to bathing your pet on a countertop. Also, attempting to bathe your ferret while you bathe or shower yourself is not recommended. In the tub, ferrets require intense supervision to prevent fatigue or drowning, which makes it nearly impossible to bathe yourself. In the shower, it's easy to accidentally step on a fuzzy or slip and fall on your pet. There is also the potential risk of your ferret ingesting soap or shampoo too.

The frequency of bathing your ferret is about once a month and never more than every two weeks, per most veterinarians. All animals have distinctive inherent odors and ferrets are no exception. The ferret's natural musky scent is something ferret enthusiasts must accept as a unique characteristic of their pets. Efforts to make a ferret smell differently often results in frustration for both owner and ferret.

A ferret's body secretes oils that nurture its skin and coat and contribute to a ferret's unique aroma. If a feret is bathed too frequently, its body will compensate by producing more than normal amounts of these oils, which results in an increasingly pungent animal. Bathing then becomes counterproductive to battling ferret odors.

This all may seem to be a daunting task, but with a little patience and practice, you will master the process in no time!
