Despite their defensive nature and sharp defense system, having a hedgehog as a pet is much different than other house pets. They are very reactive and are quick to shape into a ball, exposing only tense quills if they are startled at all. They are very unique, and provide an amazing experience in having an exotic animals as a pet.
So what should you expect from owning a pet hedgehog? It's takes some time and exposure before you're hedgehog will be comfortable with you. Operating mostly off smell and scents, familiarity is key to comfort for this exotic animal. They perform a process calling 'self-anointing' in which the hedgie will chew or lick on something they like. They then store the scent, foam at the mouth, and lick it on their quills. Self-anointing helps them smell like their surroundings, thus feeling more camouflaged and safe.Once your pet is familiarized with your smell, they will be less defensive in your presence.
Their quills will take some time to get used to as well. The quills are very spiny and sharp. After lots of exposure and handling, the quills' sting diminishes to the touch. The quills will more or less scare you as they are generally accompanied with a hiss and/or puff - another part of the natural defense system for a hedgehog. After you get used to catering to their comfort - you'll find that this pet is full of surprises.
Despite the intricate defenses of the hedgehog, they are surprisingly cuddly. A comfortable hedgie will let you pet their quills and forehead. Burrowing is a specialty of this creature and they will burrow in small places to explore new areas. Burrowing into their owners arms and armpits is common, so they will always want a hug!
After a couples months of ownership, you should be able to hold them on their back, belly-up - and comfortably. Not all pet chogs allow this, because this is exposing them and leaving them completely vulnerable. Very comfortable hedgehogs will play with you, allow you pick them up, or pet them any way you'd like. At this point, they might be comfortable interacting with any human, allowing you to have a socialite hog.
The hedgehog is often an overlooked creature when considering house pets. They are very defensive creatures so you have to build your relationship with them. After getting used to the defensive nature, you will have a very fun and unique pet who loves to cuddle. Owning a pet hedgehog is low-maintenance and they are just full of surprises. Just be careful not to step on a lost quill!
