Dan Wheldon Dies But Could It Be Prevented

On 16 October 2011,we lost one of the greatest Indy car racers of all time. His death came as a great shock to his many fans and has left us with a number of questions surrounding his death and just how Dan Wheldon died, could it have been prevented.

Dan Wheldon was killed after a 15 car crash in the last race of the season. Starting from last place, he was moving through the pack chasing a lucrative pay check, when he was caught up in the crash that occurred at more than 220 MPH and involved half the field.

Clark County, Nevada coroner Mike Murphy said Wheldon died from "blunt head trauma" caused by the force of his car hitting the safty wall, after launching in the air from the back of another drivers car.

Could this tragedy have been prevented?

It has been revealed that a number of drivers raised their concerns over the speed of the track and the numberof cars participating in the event. A Indy car race is normally contested by a maximum 24 cars. However, the Las Vegas event saw 34 cars start including a number of inexperienced drivers. Add this to the high speeds that the Las Vegas circuit is known for, and you were always in for a volatile mix.

Australia's own James Courtney was set to partner Wheldon in n the Toll Holden Racing Team V8 Supercar at the Gold Coast 600.

The accident has left a cloud of uncertainty as to whether the other Indy car driver booked for the event will race. The head of V8 super cars, has advised that they will leave that decision with the individual drivers.

The death was the first to occur in Indy car racing since its inception in 1996.

Risks are part of the job

The risks are well known for everyone involved but the death of a fellow racer and close friend has made Australia’s Mark Webber open up about just close they walk the line. ''You love pushing the car to the limit and you love walking over it and seeing if you can do it,'' he said.

Tributes have been flooding in for Wheldon’s fellow racers from a number of different racing formats including V8 supercars, AMA motocross and Formula 1.

Wheldon is survived by his wife and two young sons, Sebastian and Oliver
