A lot of beginners ask the question: where can I learn parkour? Is there a coach I should hire? Are there groups I can join? Where do I practice? How do I practice? Am I doing it right? How do I overcome my fears?
All of these are great questions that I will cover in this article:
Where Can I Learn Parkour
The answer to this is pretty simple. You can learn it anywhere. You can learn it in your back yard, in the city, at a gymnastics gym, at a playground, at a park. You are only inhibited by your imagination. Just make sure that before you do start, make sure there are no "No Parkour" signs.
Is There A Coach Should I Hire
Some cities may have a parkour coach , but most will not. You best bet is to find a parkour group on Facebook or Meetup, and members are usually more than happy to welcome beginners and to teach them the basics. After all, after you learn the basics, then you can try new moves to push your boundaries.
Where and How Do I Practice
My favorite place to practice is a gymnastics gym. Try to find one in your area. They have foam pits, pads, trampolines, bars, balance bars. It is a dream place for someone practicing parkour. Look for one in your area, and see what time they have open gym.
When you find one, the best way to practice is to find a couple of moves you want to learn, find instructional videos (if you are doing it by yourself), get the basic movements down and drill them. For instance if you want to learn a side flip, then you will get the basic moves down, practice them while rolling over a mat, then actually try the side flip while flipping onto padding. Then take it to the streets. Parkour instructional videos will become your best friend as you get better and better at parkour.
How Do I Overcome My Fear?
This is a common question, with no easy answer. It changes from person to person. This is why I like the gymnastics gym. Because they eliminate basically all of the fear with the amount of padding and foam pits, you will feel very little its so padded.
The way that has worked for me is I watch a parkour instructional video, I watch how they do it, and then I imagine myself doing it. Then I actually do it.
Or you might want to look into NLP to overcome fear. NLP is basically learning how your mind works, then making it work for your advantage.
