Opting for A Relatively Smooth Fixed Fee Divorce

One of the best ways to keep the costs down in a divorce is to go for a fixed fee arrangement. Fixed fee divorces are increasingly common as couples try to avoid huge expenses and lengthy legal wrangles.

For the ultimate in streamlined divorce you can even do just about all of the process online without even meeting a solicitor. Many websites now offer a fixed fee divorce online as do many firms where you can meet with a solicitor.

1. DIY divorce

As unlikely as it sounds you can arrange your own divorce online. You can also do it extremely smoothly with the help of a fixed fee divorce solicitor. It's certainly a far cry from the long and protracted celebrity divorces played out in the public eye with bitter recriminations and millions of pounds changing hands.

There is a big difference however between a celebrity divorce and one you can process online. If you don't own huge assets and wealth and you are splitting reasonably amicably then you should be able to go for a fixed fee divorce. If however you find yourself unable to reach any agreement with your spouse and there are a lot of disputed assets then the fixed fee divorce is really not for you.

Nobody would suggest that a divorce is easy no matter how amicable or friendly the break up is. It is always a difficult time and most couples will find it tough. If you find that you are mostly in agreement about the way forward and how you are splitting any small assets then at least a fixed fee divorce can ease the difficulties to a certain extend. Nobody going through a divorce wants high legal bills to add to the hardship they are going through after the breakdown of their marriage.

Assuming you or your spouse doesn't own a property that could be the cause of a dispute and there aren't any custody issues over children then your divorce should be fairly straightforward. In most cases you will just have to cite a cause for the breakdown of the marriage and this could include unreasonable behaviour, adultery or a separation of at least two years.

If there are children involved and you need to sort out custody issues then your divorce could move into a more complicated area especially when the family courts are involved. Your legal costs could take a sharp rise and a fixed fee divorce is not really possible in these situations.

2. Seeking legal advice

If you are comfortable that you and your spouse can reach an agreement without any lengthy disputes, with no contested assets or custody problems then you should do your best to keep costs down and speak to a fixed fee divorce solicitor. If you are unsure about how to proceed or which solicitor or firm to use then you should do a little research or ask around for personal recommendation. Most good solicitors should give you an idea of costs up front and what the process will entail before you commit. You can also search online for a solicitor or take a look at the Law Society's website for divorce specialists in your area.
