So you have decided that your marriage is beyond repair and you maybe asking yourself, “What do I do next?” The next step would be to hire a divorce lawyer that can guide you through this process. Many people hire the first person they speak with and I advice highly against this. You probably wouldn't buy the first car you test drove, so why rush into a crucial decision such as this. Choosing a Divorce lawyer is very important in this process and if done correctly can make this transition that much easier. Take a look at the tips below to help you make the correct decision.
1. Take your time! You didn't rush into getting a divorce, so don't rush into choosing a divorce lawyer. You probably have recommendations from friends or maybe you have found lawyers online, set up a consultation with at least a few and get a feel for who they are.
2. During the interview process ask questions. You need to know how the lawyer will handle your case. Make sure that before you go into meet with the lawyer that you write any questions or concerns down on a piece of paper. Ensuring that you get the answers you're looking for.
3. Talk about the communication policy. This is a stressful time and there is nothing worse than not being able to get a hold of your lawyer when you have questions. Most any lawyer is able to get back with you in 24 hours and will be able to clarify which methods they use the most.
4. Essentially you could be billed for any and all correspondence between you and your lawyer. That is why it is important that you fully understand how their billing works. They should be able to write an estimate but keep in mind no divorce is the same so this could change. If changes do occur they need to contact you immediately, this should be clear before choosing a lawyer.
5. Talk Strategy. During your consultation the lawyer should be able to give you an idea of how he or she will handle your case. Make sure the strategy outlined coincides with what is needing accomplished during your divorce. Maybe the strategy is to aggressive or too relaxed that is something that will need considering.
Choosing a lawyer shouldn't be rushed into and needs to be done in thoughtful manner. If during this process you don't feel comfortable how the lawyer approaches any of these areas maybe it time to move on and consider someone else. A good lawyer will be able to answer any and all of your questions while making you feel at ease about during the process.
