What to Do In Case Of Slander

When someone is attacking your character, it can be an extremely stressful situation. It's normal to feel angry, hurt, even panicked. It can damage your personal relationships, and your career. Here are a few steps to take when you feel you might have a case for slander.

Don't Panic

This can be hard. However, it's important that you try. When emotions are running wild, it is very difficult to address the situation properly. Take a step back. Give yourself a chance to just breathe. Don't respond right away. You're probably angry, panicked, and everything you say will show this. If you say whatever your kneed-jerk reaction may be, you could end up fuelling the fire.

Identify Your Attacker

Once you know who you're dealing with, you can begin to brainstorm about the proper course of action to take. If the attacker is a customer of yours, try to figure out what they're really upset about.

Get the facts straight

Document your attacker's side of the story. Taking the time to write down every aspect of the attacker's perspective is important. It will allow you to take some time to remove yourself from the situation and see it as an outsider might. Then you can see if there may be some truth to the accusations. You will want to determine if the event actually took place, and how you could resolve anything you may be at fault for.

Check their demands

What are they looking to accomplish by attacking you? If your attacker is upset they may have outlined how they want you to rectify the situation. Are they reasonable given the circumstance? If you made a mistake somewhere, and a simple apology will do, then you should definitely consider it.

Check their influence

Are the comments they've made likely to be seen or heard by a wide audience? Have they spread information about you on several platforms? You should be aware of what kind of damage control you may need.

Seek Trusted Counsel

For extreme cases, you may want to seek a personal injury lawyer that is familiar with Defamation of Character cases. They are skilled at determined how best to handle these situations, so your reputation isn't further damaged.
