Making Changes to Your Fantasy Football Team - Week 1 2012

With Week 1 of the NFL in the books there were plenty of surprising performances from players we expected less from. Let’s look a little more into the season long production of some of these players and see if their performances this week should lead you to go after them or to get rid of them to benefit your fantasy football team.

Robert Griffin III, QB, Washington Redskins: The rookie sensation started his career with a decisive win against the perennial contender Saints. He didn't look like a rookie as he threw all over New Orleans in Week 1. With only 7 incompletions, over 300 yards, and a pair of touchdowns to boot, RGIII showed why he was the 2nd pick in the draft.

Future: As good as he looked and how well he clicked last Sunday, I can't put a full backing into Griffin just yet. This is the same defense that made Alex Smith look like superstar in the NFC Playoffs last year. We need a bit of longer look at RGIII before we go putting him in any fantasy football lineups.

Recommendation: If he is already on your team just keep him on the bench (unless of course you don’t have anybody above him). If he is on waivers leave him there for now and wait to see how he looks after Week 3 or so.

Kevin Ogletree, WR, Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys kicked off the season by bringing a new name to the masses with Kevin Ogletree. Most NFL fans didn’t know about the 3rd receiver in Dallas but many did this week. He caught 8 balls for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns on kick off night against the Giants.

Future: I feel that with Dez Bryant’s issues and Miles Austin’s injuries that Ogletree was able to give the bulk of the valuable training camp/preseason reps with Tony Romo. So right now they have a great connection, that connection won’t last with the better talents in the receiving corps.

Recommendation: I think you can start Ogletree for a week or two more. If I had him I’d be trying to sell high and get something that would benefit my fantasy football team in the long run. With more reps to Bryant and with Austin and Witten getting healthier, I don’t see Ogletree is going to keep up these numbers (or anything close to them). Don’t waste a roster spot on him when there are going to be better fantasy football receivers available.

CJ Spiller, RB, Buffalo Bills: The Bills may have been pounded by the Jets but at least one of their players had a solid day. When Fred Jackson went down with yet another injury CJ Spiller stepped in and provided 169 yards and a touchdown and another 25 yards receiving.

Future: Spiller is going to be the starting running back in Buffalo for at least the next 3 weeks. He is going to get a lot of touches as there isn’t much depth behind him and he has performed well when starting in the past.

Recommendation: In fantasy football it’s important to have as many options as possible, so starting running backs are extremely important. The Bills next three opponents are the Chiefs, Browns, and Pats, all teams that can be subject to giving up the run. I think at the very least you can start Spiller for the next few weeks and then evaluate him and Fred Jackson afterwards.
