Why live off grid?

Living off grid is a lifestyle. It is an honest, down to earthand healthy way of living. You not only raise your own vegetables but also try to sustain yourself and family with other ways of providing your own food. Raising chickens are very popular to this lifestyle. They provide a family with fresh eggs and fresh meat. Most anyone can raise chickens, since they don’t necessarily need a lot of space and it is also easy to build an inexpensive chicken coop.

Learn about chickens

It is important to know something about chickens, the different types for laying eggs and different types for meat. An egg laying chicken is mainly for that purpose, but may do as chicken soup down the road. Chickens also need to befed if they do not run freely. This it is good to know what to feed them to make them a good “egg layer” or for excellent tasting meat. There are also guidelines if you want to be a bio chicken farmer.

Your chickens need a home

Not only is feeding your hens properly an important factorfor healthy happy chickens. A home where they can retreat and feel secure is just as important. A chicken that is nervous will not lay as much as a hen that has a warm, secure and quiet nest. Building an inexpensive chicken coop is absolutely essential for your hens.

Steps to find right plans

You will need to define your needs and wishes before you build your coop. Plan out exactly how much space you will have available for your hens. This amount of space will give you an idea how large the coop can be and how many chickens you can hold.

Many have opted for a portable coop. Portable coops are mobile. You can move it from one corner of your yard to the other corner. If you feel you want to expand then you can build another portable coop as an extension. If you ever decide to move to another home, you can take your chicken and portable coop with you!

There are really many designs to choose from in building plans for chicken coops. The best ones are with explicit photos of how to build them. Some plans even have video instructions which are extremely helpful. It is really advisable to use good plans to avoid unnecessary aggravation and costs.

Stick to your decision to live off grid and to support your family by providing for your own food. Building an inexpensive chicken coop with the right plans will not only be an accomplishment but also a fun family project. Your chickens will appreciate their new home!
