How do I raise chickens at home and what do I need to get started? These my be the questions going through your head when trying to raise chickens from home. Raising chickens is becoming more and more popular as the years come in. Some people raise chickens to produce their own organic free range eggs, others for organic poultry, and other just do it for fun. Raising chicken is not as hard as it my seem when starting. It's a fairly easy and simple process to get started and a fun activity for the family or yourself. So let's get the basics down on how to raise chickens at home.

How Do I Raise Chickens at Home - Learning the Basics

1.) First, You are going to want to see if there are any laws preventing you from having chickens in your yard. You can do this by going to your local government. Once approved, find out the breed of chicken you want. If you are rasing chickens for their eggs you have two options to choose from since you can either have brown or white eggs. If you want brown eggs, pick a breed with red ear lobes and if you want white eggs pick a breed with white ear lobes. You should be able to find pretty could deals for buying chickens. Ones that are not a rare breed can cost about $10 for and adult and even cheaper if you want to start with chicks. If your lucky you can probably get them for free.

2.) What to Feed Chickens? You can either decide to give your chickens homemade meals or a commercial feed when feeding them. If you decide to make homemade meals be sure to add grit to their diet as well. Since chickens don't have teeth they need grit in their diet to help digest their food. If you decide to go with a commercial feed you will not have to worry about adding git to your chickens diet since most company already add it in with the feed.

3.) Protecting your chickens from predators, and weather is also important when raising chicken from home. Chickens are a tasty treat to many animals, some of these are dogs, foxes, coyote, hawks, and owls are just some of the many animals that can harm your flock. It is important to protect your chickens from such predators by building them a chicken coop or chicken house. Chicken coops can be a little pricy, with some costing a couple hundrend dollars but it is only a one time purchase. There are other options as well though. It you a do it yourself type of person you can build your own coop for a fraction of the price. You can find cheap chicken coop plans online and build yourself a quality and safe coop for your chickens.

So how do I raise chickens from home? I always pick the breed I want, make sure they are on a healthy diet, and I build them a safe chicken coop so they are protected from predators. Follow these steps and you should do well at raising chicken.
