Wondering how to raise a chicken as a pet? Believe me your not alone, many people want to know if chickens make a good pet. So first off, I'm assuming you want the chicken in your backyard. Having a chicken loose in your house would be quite entertaining story to tell your friends but it wouldn't fun mess to clean up. Chicken are the best inside animals but outsides, yes you can have one as a pet. You would also reap benefits of having a chicken by eating or selling the delicious eggs the lay.
So if you want a chicken as a pet, in my opinion, is a pretty neat ideal. I don't necessarily say I keep my chickens as a pet, but instead use them for the eggs. With that, I just want to teach you a few basic or raising chickens or in this case how to raise a chicken as an pet.
3 Steps on How to Raise a Chicken as a Pet
1.) First check to see if you are allowed to have chickens in your backyard. Some state or counties differ on their laws on having backyard chickens, some state make it illegal and I don't want you to get in any legal trouble. So just take a trip down to your local courthouse and find out if you can have a chicken in your backyard.
2.) Secondly, You are going to want to buy or build your chicken a coop or home. Buying a coop is probably the biggest upfront expense you will have to purchase throughout the process of getting a chicken as a pet. They are study and nice but there are different options if you want to save a lot of money. You can build you own coop. There are many plans online that teach you how to build a chicken coop for pretty cheap. So if your good with your hands or want to try a new project that option just may be for you. They main goal we want to do here is protect your chickens from harm. There are a lot of animals out their that will harm your chickens if they are not safe and secure.
3.) Third, picking out your chicken can be a task in it own. You can either go with a baby chick or go with an adult chicken. You can get baby chicks for like $1 each or cheaper and adult chickens cost about $10 for a normal breed. When searching for an adult breed make sure they have no lumps, they are not balding, and that their eyes are clear and bright.
These are some tips that work well for me when raising my chickens and I hope the work just as well for you. Learning how to raise a chicken as an pet is not an impossible task and I believe that you can do it. So let go over what we learned.
