Trying to learn the steps to raising chickens? So what is your reason for wanting to raise chickens? Is it for the eggs, the meat, for fun, or having it as a pet. Those are all the main reasons people raise chickens. Me personally I like free range chicken eggs so I raise my chickens for egg laying, but whatever your reason, the steps to raising chickens should be pretty similar. I will be sharing what works well for me when raising chickens and you can decide if its right for you. So let's get started.
4 Steps to Raising Chickens - What Works Best for Me
(1) Get familiar with your law. In some places it is illegal to raise chicken in your yard and you could get find if they catch you raising chickens in your backyard. So the very first step to get out of the way is to make sure you can take care of chickens within your yard. You can do this by visiting you courthouse and asking them about their chicken laws.
(2) So if you figure out you can raise chickens in your yard, the next step will finding out if you have enough room in your backyard depending on how many chickens you want, chickens need at least 3 square feet between each other. So depending on how big your yard is make sure you have enough space for the chicken to run around.
(3) You also should feed your chickens the right portion amount of proteins and carbohydrates and of course, water. Water is probably the most important ingredient with the chickens diet. If you are going to raise adult chickens the usually drink around 2 cups of water per day, also if the are egg layers they drink twice as much as chickens that don't lay eggs. They usually drink more water when they are older. So be sure to keep your flock watered otherwise they won't eat.
(4) Your chickens are going to need shelter to stay protected from the rain and also predators. You can protect your chickens by building them a coop or going out and purchasing a pre-built one. Either why they are going to need some sort of protection. I learned a lot about chicken coops from Kern's chicken farm.
These are just my steps to raising backyard chickens, you might hear different ways over the net but these are what work best for me. So make sure its legal to raise chickens in your yard, check how much room you have, feed and water them properly, and buy or build them a cheap chicken coop.
