5 Steps to A Better Body Image

Do you ever take a look in the mirror and instantly start critiquing what you see? Do you feel less confident in daily activities because you don’t like the way you look? While everyone has insecurities about their body, it’s important to not let those insecurities get in the way of living life. If you’re struggling with a poor body image, then try these five steps that can help you feel more confident and happy about your body.

1. Be Positive

Working your way towards a better body image requires a change of thoughts. You can’t feel confident if you’re constantly thinking negatively about yourself. Body image expert Leslie Goldman says, “Treat yourself as you would treat others, and you'll find negative thoughts will lessen over time.” Be a friend to your body. Try replacing critical thoughts you have with compliments about features you find beautiful.

2. Stop Comparing

Just as being positive takes discipline, training ourselves to not compare our bodies to others’ requires practice. We are no strangers to billboards, fashion magazines, and movies persuading us to look a certain way, but it’s important not to criticize ourselves based on what we see in the media. “Constantly comparing ourselves to others makes us feel like we’re not measuring up,” says Clinical psychologist Sari Fine Shepphird, PhD. “Quit the comparisons and you’ll feel better about yourself in the long run.” Surround yourself with positive images, quotes, and friends that uplift you.

3. Dress Well

There may be days when you’re struggling with your body image and all you feel like wearing are baggy or poor-fitting clothes. Style consultant Sally McGraw recommends quite the opposite approach. She remarks, “No matter how tall you are or which birthday is on the horizon or where you carry the most jiggle, you can learn to flatter your figure. You can utilize your natural beauty to reflect your undeniably amazing self outward to the observing world.” Next time your confidence is waning, try slipping into your favorite prom dresses uk outfit and highlighting your best features—whether that means curling your gorgeous locks of hair or showing off your curves.

4. Write a List

Take some time to write a list of the most influential people in your life. What have you learned from them? What are attributes in them that you admire? Now try making a list of attributes in yourself that you admire, or qualities that you want to develop, and remind yourself that there is more to you than what you see in the mirror.

5. Take Care of Your Body

Take time to appreciate your body—whether that means taking a refreshing walk outside, getting a facial, or managing your time better so that you are less stressed during the week. Our bodies help us do the things we love. It’s important that we love them in return. As you incorporate these five steps into your life, you can begin to see your body as strong and beautiful again.
