A Straight Edge Razor Kit: Your Face Will Thank You Later

My favorite thing so far this year? A straight edge razor kit. What a great investment that turned out be. I've fallen in love with shaving, who would have thought it.

It took me a good couple of years to get around to buying one. It was one of those purchases where you think it is a good idea and sounds cool, so you do a little bit of investigating, but ultimately don't bother. Now that I've finally got around to learning how to shave with a straight razor, I can hardly believe that more people don't do it.

Superior Shaving

Despite what modern wet and electric razors will have you believe, nothing shaves better than a straight razor, and you don't even need to do it daily. The shave is that close.

My girlfriend noticed my skin was smoother without even knowing I had switched razor. Why are we all wasting so much money each month on throw-away cartridges and disposable razors, when something which lasts forever is a superior product?

I guess back when they first appeared, people were attracted to the modern safety razors, convenient to use, safer, and supposedly sharper than traditional blades (I've seen discovered most of this to be completely untrue).

Shaving has now become demoted to a chore, one of those things like taking a shower or doing the laundry that just needs to be done. Taking a shower can be very refreshing and luxurious though at times, so why can't shaving be too?

This is exactly what I discovered with my straight razor experience. I have gone from just "getting on with" shaving to "really enjoying and looking forward to" it. I find it very pleasurable, and as an additional bonus, my skin has never been smoother.

Straight Edge Razor Kit Contents

A typical set consists of a lot more than I previously used to have, just a razor and some shaving cream. Now I have the following things in my kit:

• Razor

• Razor strop (helps keep it sharp)

• Badger hair brush

• Shaving soap

You might think the brush and soap are a bit over the top, but if I was going for convenience I never would have switched in the first place. The quality of soap and the lather you can get with a brush makes it well worthwhile anyway.

Also, think how much more environmentally friendly it is to have soap and razor instead of disposable razor blades/cartridges and a shaving canister that needs recycling every month.

Why Is This Method So Unpopular Now?

My actual belief is that people just got out of the habit of it. If my father had used a straight razor, I'm sure I would too. I think the advertising is a big deal as well. On TV we only see wet razors, or electric razors getting advertised. It makes sense though, it is in the interest of big shaving companies to get us to buy products that we need to keep replacing.

A straight razor lasts for life, not much profit in that.

There is also a lack of information readily available about where to buy straight razors. I only found one or two useful websites in my search. Fortunately though those websites that do exist are made by enthusiasts who know their stuff and provide some excellent reading and resources for those of us who want to rediscover the joy of shaving.

If you do end up making the switch like I did, your skin will thank you for it.

Street Talk

You're slowly pushing me that way, Dom. My skin might be up for the switch, but my neck is still a little worried. I'm not concerned about shaving and texting because I don't text at all. They used to text a long time ago (via the telegraph), but they smartly gave it all up when voice communication became widely available. Talking is much easier, much quicker. I'm still trying to figure out why everyone is going back to the old way. Anyway...great article! :-)

From my personal opinion I just hated wasted money on razor blades that got blunt after 2 weeks and never really did a good job in the first place, so when I found out straight razors did the job properly (and looked cool) I was sold

Used to watch my grandfather shave this way years ago, thought then it was cool. By the time I had grown whiskers the disposable type had come out. Good to see you can still get these. I may just take this up.

Be environmental and stop throwing blades away Mark :)

The cup and brush are the main draw man... :) I love this whole idea. People got away from it because it requires a bit of attention, and you can not text while doing it. :)
