Are You A Competitive Dresser?

I’m not sure whether I would quite class myself as a competitive dresser. It’s often said that women dress to compete against other women, not to look good for men. I would agree with that. I’ve never cared what a man thought about my appearance – not even my husband on my wedding day. I’m afraid I took it for granted that he would think I looked beautiful (which he did), but then he always does whatever I look like – so I'm rather dismissive of his comments. I’ve always thought that the only opinion I really cared about was my own and I certainly have never entertained the idea that I might be a competitive dresser. At least not until today.

Today, I read an article by Liz Jones, a well known fashion commentator in the UK who was once the editor of Marie Claire in the UK, saying that she recognises that she is a competitive dresser and likes to be the best dressed even at funerals. I read that and thought ‘how ridiculous’ until I recalled one of my grandmother’s funerals. I set out to look as glamorous as I possibly could all in black and knew that I would out-dress every other woman who was present. Grieving for the loss of my grandmother who I adored wasn’t a high priority at that moment.

But it’s not just at funerals I have experienced this. I remember the delight I felt when I went to one of my nieces weddings wearing a pair of sky high Giuseppe Zannotti white cut away wedges which spawned a range of copies on the high street. I loved those shoes and so did most of the guests. They were the talk of the wedding (after the brides dress of course). My sister who had called me a very rude name when she first saw me because they made me so tall, complained at the end of the day that no one had talked about her ‘little sister’ – they had all talked about the woman with those shoes! I not ashamed to admit – I went home with a very large smile on my face.

Although I have struggled with my weight at some points in my life, I have always been able to wow people with my fashion sense and put together a look which is uniquely mine. Hey perhaps I’m kidding myself. I am a competitive dresser. I’m not competitive about labels (I can take them or leave them) and I’m not completive about the price of outfits (I like vintage, high street or designer), but I know that when I go somewhere I will look different from all the other women there.

I have never understood the desire to buy one of the ‘in things of the season’. If do buy something that is very popular I make sure that I do something very different with it. At the recent Royal Wedding I felt extremely sorry for the three women who turned up in the same blue and white coat. Now I would go to the ends of the earth to make sure this couldn’t happen to me because I would be mortified. I want to look different. If I’d been there I would have wanted to beat that well known competitive dresser Victoria Beckham (though I certainly would have struggled to beat her on the high heel front!)

So although I’ve always known that I enjoyed looking different from other women I’d never put a label on it. But now I think I can safely admit, I am a fully fledged competitive dresser. What about you?
