Fashion Tips for Tall & Curvy Women

5 feet 11 inches and 120 lbs. That's what a lot of people picture when you talk about a tall woman. They see in their minds images of swimsuit and supermodels or any other beautiful specimen that is splashed across a billboard. Most people don't think of tall women as being curvy, voluptuous, or, as we like to say here in the South, "thick." Considered a term of endearment in many other parts of the country, a lot of women are perfectly content to be classified as "thick" or curvy. Unfortunately the fashion industry has been slow to cater to the growing number of ladies who consider themselves curvy.

It's even worse for TALL, thick women. If you're a tall woman with curves, you're practically a martian in the department stores. If you can manage to find jeans that have the length to allow you to wear a pair of wedges, they flatten your butt, squeeze your hips, and/or gape at the back. It's hard enough to find blouses that are long enough in the torso as a tall woman, but add curves to the equation and it's almost a guarantee that you'll be the poster child for bringing back the mid-drift--lawd help us.

As a woman with both height and curves I feel it is a duty of mine to share some of the fashion tips I apply for a tall, curvy figure. Hopefully these few snippets can help you capitalize on the fact that you have what many women want: height and curves ;)

Attention to Detail is Key

Now let me say up front that while I love dressing up and making that extra effort to get the double-take on the street, it's just not practical on most days! So my philosophy is that attention to small details gives you plenty of bang for your buck. Let's face it; most people equate height with being authoritative. Textures and ultra feminine touches such as peplum, kick pleats, babydoll necklines and bubble sleeves can add just the right amount of delicate to your ensemble. The right accessories can give you all the 'wow' factor you need when keeping it casual. Choose pieces that complement one of your natural features such as eye color or skin tone rather than simply matching the outfit. If you don't already own them, I insist that you invest in at least one brown and one black leather belt. Try to build a collection of unique belts to give your look an extra oomph with minimal effort. Oh and the best accessory? Well hydrated, healthy skin!

Don't Be Afraid of Shapewear

Before I address shapewear let me say that if you haven't already invested in a QUALITY bra, that needs to be resolved ASAP. I highly recommend you visit a mid-range to upscale department store (think Dillard's, Sears) that sells lingerie for help with proper sizing and fit. Now to the point of shapewear. Whether you want that booty lifted, those thighs toned, or that back fat smoothed, shapewear is the go-to option. Spanx is a very popular brand but there are several other quality lines to help you achieve the results you want. You do want to be sure to purchase quality pieces though as there can be a tremendous difference in comfort, compression, etc. By the way, this may seem dated but never underestimate the wonders of an under slip. An item as simple and delicate as a slip between your shapewear and dress can save an entire day's worth of checking for visible bunching or seam lines (not to mention protection from sudden gusts of wind!)

Zebra Pants & Cheetah Blouse? No. Belted Tiger Print Dress? YES.

As a tall, curvy woman you can rock bold, daring prints that accentuate your best features. But when choosing animal prints, fit and placement are key. You don't want a piece that hangs on you like a muumuu. If you have broad shoulders, patterned skirts, jeans or pants will draw attention downward. Ladies who are curvy in the hips should consider prints on a blouse or layered piece. The hourglass figure can rock full-bodied prints in the form of fitting dresses, skirts, or pants. Any of these choices will give you spice while maintaining a polished appearance (especially when paired with your shapewear ;).When selecting prints in general, don't be afraid to mix up sizes and colors as long as you balance with a solid tone.

Tall Women Should Elongate Too

Even as a statuesque woman, don't shy away from creating a well-proportioned, sleek silhouette. The typical rules of thumb for apple, pear, and hourglass shapes should be applied with the added suggestion that you consider which types of footwear accentuate your legs. Stilettos, flats and kitten heels will make the legs appear longer and thinner. Chunky and stacked heels will balance out fuller calves and hips. Wedges can vary depending on their width.

Find a Tailor and Stick with Him/Her.

Now unless you're fortunate enough to run in a circle of seamstresses, you know how hard it can be to find a tailor. Not your local dry cleaners. I mean a qualified, I-can-make-you-a-suit-from-scratch tailor. Take a trip to your local men's suit store and they should be able to recommend one to start you off. You want to look for a tailor that is flexible, up to date with styles, has a verifiable reputation, and is affordable. Take the time to request samples or schedule a sit-down to make sure he/she can do more than just un-hem your pants. Having an A-1 tailor gives you an ace in the hole when you simply can't find just the right outfit in just the right size.

Trends Come and Go, But Staples are a Must

Being tall is no excuse to not have the standard wardrobe pieces of any other fashion sensible lady out there. Review your wardrobe and ensure that you at a minimum have: your basic white tees, perfect fit denim jeans, pencil or A-line skirt, all purpose blazer, LBD, ballerina flats, nude pump, knee high boots, leather jacket, and all-weather trench.

Keeping your wardrobe simple and stylish is not difficult when you know where to focus your attention. Tall, curvy women have to make an additional effort to find pieces that fit just right but when we do, we're guaranteed to turn heads.
