Paul Smith Clothing A Great British Institution And Retailer

Having started life in the sleepy city of Nottingham in central England Paul Smith has certainly grown in to a world renown brand known for quality and great design.

Having set up his first shop in Nottingham in 1970 it wasn't long before he was showing his first small collection in Paris in 1976 and now that collection has grown in to a range that includes wallets, shirts, bags, a jeans range and everything else that a modern person needs in their day to day life.

The running theme through his collections has always been the Paul Smith Stripe which is one of the most iconic pieces of branding in the world. It is so subtle and easy to apply that you will find it on the inside of his wallets, the back of his shoes and as the lining of his bags. Sometimes it is in black and white and sometimes it is in its original full colour version, both when observed spell out one thing, Paul Smith.

Since its launch the Paul Smith brand has been split up in to many different sub brands, these include Paul Smith Jeans, P.S by Paul Smith, Paul Smith Womens, Paul Smith Accessories and the R.Newbold range which has been designed for the Japanese market. By diversifying in to china plates, rugs and fragrances you can see that Paul Smith has one eye on the future and the changing world of commerce.

Some of Paul Smith success can be traced back to the balance he has created between his manafoctoring and his retail space. This is key to the Paul Smith outlook, one compliments the other which creates the balance which runs through the whole company.

More recently they have shown their confidence in design by launching the Single Fin range which is a tongue in cheek look at Surf culture. The pieces from this range have a fun feel about them and the cuts are more casual, this is a great direction and it shows that such an established company can still have its finger on the pulse of the street wear scene. This shows the ever green mentality of Paul Smith.

With so much to do it is amazing that the man himself still has time to be fully involved in the design and choosing the fabrics, this again shows the longevity of the Paul Smith brand. It is this level of commitment that is key to the future of the brand and I think that in many years in the future we will still have pair of Paul Smith shoes on our feet or a Paul Smith wallet in our back pockets.
