Snazzy Hats

A hat is probably one of the oldest items of the human wardrobe and it is impossible to say when first hats emerged. So why do we wear hats? The origin of the word “hat” provides the clue: believed to be of Anglo-Saxon origin meaning “cover”, which is the primary purpose of headwear. As with all apparel, hats were originally worn for purely practical reasons, keeping people warm as well as protecting from rain, sun, dust, or falling objects. Gradually, the function of the hat was upgraded, and it became a symbol of the wearer’s status and prosperity.

Formerly, etiquette forbade anyone venturing out of doors without a hat, and the dictates of fashion meant that, with the exception of homeless beggars, the entire populace wore hats. However, at the turn of the twentieth century the activities of both men and women changed significantly and those changes brought about a major revolution in the fashion world too with a result that clothing and headwear became more practical and utilitarian. The second part of the twentieth century saw a major decline in hat wearing. Nowadays, we use hats normally to keep warm on a cold day or hide from the scorching sunrays, or on special occasions such as weddings, christenings or cocktail parties. The hat is no longer commander-in-chief of the dress code but rather its use is dictated by our lifestyle. Funnily enough, most people who wear hats to weddings rarely use them on a regular basis, and it shows, because wearing a hat takes a certain posture and a bit of practice.

Only style conscious fashionistas remain devoted to this highly elegant accessory and appreciate the benefits of wearing it. It is kind of sad that most women do not realize that a classy and elegant hat can transform the overall look, draw attention to the face and just add a touch of mystery.

While it is certainly true that hats made from expensive formal-wear materials are suitable for special occasions only, on the whole hats are a very versatile accessory, and some styles are equally apposite for day wear and evening wear.

In recent years there has been an increased interest in vintage inspired clothing and accessories, and this has seen a revival in popularity of retro style hats. One such style is the cloche hat. Very feminine, they tend to frame the face beautifully, drawing attention to the eyes. Cloche hats best suit women of petite frame with small faces. Another popular style is the wide brim hat, which can be either very simple or dressy. While the variety of brim sizes makes this style of hat suitable for anyone, a hat with a very wide brim will look better on a tall lady and short women should avoid wearing them to avoid looking like a mushroom!

With the variety of styles there is a hat to suit everyone. The truth is that not everyone knows how to select the right hat or how to wear it. Be adventurous and add this accessory to your wardrobe. As an item of apparel the hat has made a long journey through the centuries performing practical, religious, ceremonial and other roles. It deserves a chance to crown your beautiful head!
