Why Would You Want To Dress Like A Celebrity?

I have a confession to make. I love looking at fashion of all kinds including celebrity fashion. There’s nothing better than buying a fashion magazine packed with celebrities on the red carpet or watching E’s weekly critique of stars from the worlds of tv , film or music (albeit with the sound down). I’m not interested in the individuals and their private lives but I do love looking at their clothes and how their style. However, when it comes to myself, I have no urge to dress like a celebrity. I know what suits me and I enjoy being very individual. I cannot think of anything worse of buying something just because I saw it worn by a ‘celebrity’ However, there are clearly lots of women who like to dress like a celebrity and copy their style. The former Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge is trying very hard not to be seen as a style icon and wearing clothes from the high street. However, I think she is being naive in this. From now on whatever she wears will be scrutinised and copied. She already has a clear idea of what suits her and yesterday when she and Prince William met President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, at Buckingham Palace she wore a fitted, stylish cream dress from Reiss. As soon as the picture of the Duchess was released, this caused a frenzy of buying and apparently the dress has now sold out. Whether she likes it or not this is keep going to happen.

I can see for individual designers or fashion labels that having the ‘right’ celebrity wear your clothes can turn out to be extremely lucrative for the added exposure and the opportunities to either sell more clothes or accessories and perfumes. However, the problem I have with people wanting to dress like a celebrity is far too often they just think about the clothing and the person who wore it and don’t think about whether they have a similar body shape, the right colouring and whether it would suit them and their personality. I know fashion is all about personal taste, but the celebrities don’t always look very good and I often think – sack the stylist.

Michelle Obama has been widely praised in America for her sense of style and the fact that she champions unknown designers and labels. But she made one of her periodic mistakes yesterday at Buckingham Palace, wearing a terrible pink bolero jacket and a dress with a dirndl skirt that was outdated and unflattering and just the wrong length making her legs look chunky. No one should want to copy that. She pulled it back in the evening, looking elegant and beautiful all in white, not only rocking the current trend for wearing white instead of black but also showing off her magnificently toned shoulders.

Of course neither the First Lady, Michelle Obama, nor Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge would see themselves as ‘celebrities’, but they can influence fashion choices, just as much as singers, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Cheryl Cole, Jessica Simpson and Beyonce do, a whole swathe of established and up and coming actresses and more recently the occasional reality star.

Three of my particular favourite style icsons are Gwen Stefani, Debbie Harry, Helen Mirren but I don’t want to ape their style. What I like about all three women is the confidence that they show in their own appearance and go for what they want. I suspect Stefani likes to be admired, but I don’t imagine the other two care two hoots for what anyone thinks about their appearance. So my advice is rather than thinking how you can dress like a celebrity, develop a style that is entirely your own.
