Dad, You Are Not A Hipster!

OK, our generation invented cool and most definitely invented “hip”. So why do my teens refuse to let me call myself a hipster?

My job as a dad is to embarrass my kids, right? Works better when they’re teenagers and their friends come over. They try to disappear quickly to the basement or to their rooms so dad can’t “perform”. And I will!

Do you remember the days when we used words like “hip”, “cool”, and even “keen”? I like to lay claim to these phrases as a Baby Boomer but it is interesting to see how they are still being used today; well, maybe not keen, but I’ll bet most of you know what it is or what it implies.

Apparently “hipster” is a new slang word and heaven only knows what it really means. My teens tell me that people who are hipsters:

• don’t announce it…but know they’re one

• dress a certain way…but you can’t pick them out of a crowd

• have a certain attitude…but won’t let on

I don’t get it! How can you be something if people don’t know you are that thing?

• You can tell when somebody is cool…they’ll even tell you they are

• You can tell when someone is keen…well, now it probably means attentive

• You can even tell when someone married…oops!

So here is what I’ve decided…I am a hipster…and you will never know it because I won’t let on. Somehow that is how it works. My teens don’t agree with this assumption on my part but I ignore them (that’s called payback time and it’s…hip).

Remember what Shakespeare said, “To be or not to be, that is the question”. Well, I choose to be a hipster and therefore the question has been answered. It’s better than the alternative of “not to be”. That would mean I wouldn’t know who I am or how I should present myself. Not acceptable!

Therefore, children of mine, dad is a hipster because “I said so” (the ultimate parent response, by the way). You may shake your head at me all you want or give me your best fake smile (while considering me nursing home material) but I am a hipster!

One last parting thought: have you ever heard the song, “It’s Hip to be Square”? Well, the word “square” is another Boomer word and used to be somewhat derogatory and mean “you weren’t cool”. But I’ve decided to reinvent that word as well and attach it to my “hipsterness”.

You got it…I’m a square hipster…which makes me the coolest dad. Pretty keen, huh?
