Father\'s Day, Fathers\' Day Or Fathers Day – What Are We Celebrating?

Once again, I put the question is Father's day seen as singular, or plural possessive or plural non-possessive?

As per Mother's day the meaning's seen as singular possessive, and a day of celebrating one's father within the family.

Interestingly it was first proposed as plural possessive by Sonora Smart Dodd in her petition to the US Congress, adopted in 1913 as singular possessive, it remains so today. The day's seen as complementary to Mother's day, adopted by Congress, it quickly lost momentum and disappeared off the calendar. Dodd, who had been the force behind the day, had taken a short sojourn at an Art Institute and on her return she started to promote the day again.

To this father's are grateful, nearly left out, the day has become a celebration to fathers; but one must thank the New York Associated Men's wear retailers for backing the day, they saw the commercial benefits behind having such a day. What does that tell you? The day received its recognition as a day for financial gain, and not because the father enjoyed himself and a child was born.

The day for me has no similarity to Mother's day, where a mothers honoured for what she is, the bearer of the children as well as the person behind the child. Most fathers spend their time at work, earning the money so the family can eat, be clothed, and later be educated. His primary functions, are as provider, protector, and planner; and naturally as procrastinator when it comes to aid about the house.

Yet we have grown up celebrating the day in the way that Dad wanted; fishing, boating, camping, lazing about the house, feeding him breakfast and special lunches, buying presents and generally spoiling him rotten. Fathers in some cases receive more than the Mother on her day, as it's a good time to butter Dad up for something wanted later. Spoil him now, and ask later, a trick we probably all tried with different levels of success.

To me it's a day that warrants removal from the calendar, it's a day that should become a weekly celebration, every Sunday, Father's day. No need for presents, as ultimately he's paying anyway, but a day to spoil him weekly. Without him the family is nothing, cannot exist, children would not be born.

So to all that read, honour your Father and make every Sunday, Fathers day, to all Fathers, enjoy the day and let's start a petition to Congress to have every Sunday declared Father's day.

I always thought it was tricky, as children need money to buy presents for dad, but if mom does not work who gives them money? Dad, so dad many times ends up buying its own present, altogether celebrations during the year only mean money for some and a trendy competition for the rest. :) Cheers

Dear Rob, You would not be able to get congress to pass that bill, despite the majority of them are men.

Who gives a damn about congress Alfred, I say lets declare it, unilaterally without them, power to the people on this one or should I say power to the men not in congress.

Actually, I'd forgotten it was father's day. It was my weekly phone-call to my lot in UK that reminded me! Frankly, I couldn't care less. And you're correct in your cynacism (is that the right word?) it's just a way to screw more money out of us.

Don't worry Kim. This time you are the recipient. Presents, presents and more presents!!! I'm a crass American. We love presents.

Joan, you made me laugh. "crass American" ha!

That it is Kim, it was just interesting to me on a bit of research, Father's Day only brings in 25% on sales that Mother's Day does, what does that tell you... Dads are happy with less, and would be happy with nothing, just more often.

So you're saying you always want nothing to be happy? Less than nothing, regularly? Now I'm confused. I think I'll have to go back and read between the lines of your article!!

Father's deserve to have their day of celebration, but here's the thing Rob, if every Sunday is Father's Day, then what will we do on a weekly basis to celebrate mothers? I think you shouldn't eliminate presents. Dad's love presents, and Mom and sometimes the kids are in the work force too (times have changed), so they can get Dad a little something to make him happy. I hope you are being well celebrated tomorrow, because you deserve it. I'd like to know when there's going to be an Aunt's Day. I feel left out.

First, my son has bought us tickets for an outing and show at the Lipizzaner center in RSA, something I've wanted to see for years.. with camera in hand, batteries a plenty I'm off to see the horses perform.. Second I will start a petition immediately to Congress for the declaration of Aunts Day.

Awww thanks. Wonder if they'll listen to that petition the same way they listen to others. If so, Aunt's Day is going to take a while. Meanwhile, you're going to get some good pictures tomorrow.

I declare Aunt's Day to be the third Sunday in July. I figure, Mom's are May, Dad's are June. Aunt's can be July. Uncles can be August. Grandparent's Day is already in September. We've got it all covered! As for the presents, homemade presents are the best, of which my husband received many today. And we do receive them on a regular basis from our kids, so every week is Mom or Dad's Day!
