So you are watching a movie and you see an epic sword fight and think to yourself, "I wish I could fight like that." While you may not think of yourself as a fierce warrior, it is not a talent most people are gifted with naturally these days either. Which means that anyone who is seriously interested in teaching themselves to use a sword has a good shot at achieving great results. How does one go about improving their skills with a blade? First you choose a sword style that suites your build and temperament.

Learning fancy sword technique is not as easy as simply waltzing out to the store, picking a sword and swinging it about as hard as you can. First you need to do some research and learn about the large variety of swords and other weapons out there. Various sword blades are designed with specific uses in mind. So the blade you choose will decide how and what techniques you are able to utilize effectively while sparring with others. Therefore it is extremely important that you know the proper usage of the sword you choose before you begin practicing sword techniques with it.

Additionally you will want to know the purpose for the style. Most sword fighting styles evolved as weapons, armor, and customs changed. Therefore a particular style may be designed for use in duels in the 18th century utilizing a small sword. This style would be entirely appropriate when facing a single opponent, however in other situations perhaps less ideal. So it is obvious that you will want to carefully select the sword fighting style according to what types of sparring you intend to engage in.

If you don't particularly care about the sword fighting style you would like to use but do have a preferred blade design that you enjoy using (such as a classic katana or perhaps a German broadsword), research the name of it look into what sword fighting style uses it. This is a simple straightforward process for choosing a style and determining what sword techniques you will be implementing.

Another way of determining what style of sword fighting suits you best is to examine your personal preferences when you are sparring. Do you prefer to keep your distance and strike from afar? Or perhaps you enjoy throwing caution to the winds and pushing in close to deliver rapid cuts and slashes.

Whatever your personal preferred fighting style, there is a sword to match it. The key now is finding the right style and sword for you. Once you have these matched up, you are free to begin practicing sword techniques.
