What to Do With A Bengal Tiger In Your Lifeboat?

That's a question that you don't hear every day, do you? However when Piscine Molitor Patel was thrown into this situation suddenly, he had to find ways to survive this ordeal. This story is told in a book called Life of Pi by Yann Martel. I'm also very happy to say a movie based on this novel will be released at the end of this year. So if you haven't read this book, you should catch the movie when it's out.

Back to the question

If I found myself with an adult Bengal tiger in my lifeboat due to an unexpected ship wreck, I'd find all odds are against me and even if I survived the night, I'd be breakfast for the big cat. Wouldn't you feel the same way? That is if I survive sharing the limited space with an orangutan, a zebra AND a hyena.

The uniqueness of the story line and the simple story telling are what made me fall in love with this book and think it's still the most entertaining book to read. Believe me, I have lots of books and it wasn't easy to pick a favourite.

Piscine's experiences and adventures are told in a diary form, as written by Piscine as he recorded his daily doings to help keep him teetered to the reality of his situation. His story is one of courage, resourcefulness and a never-give-up attitude. It taught me a lot about the human spirit and will because if he could live with a Bengal tiger in his lifeboat (even though it's just a story), what couldn't any human do? What can't I do in my comfortable life? I believe after reading the story, I too can achieve anything.

Everyone should read Life of Pi because it is a story of tremendous hope againt immense odds of trials and tribulations. It is also written with humour, compassion, with a touch of spirituality and the very basic connection between man and beast.

Some of the most unforgettable bits for me would be when Piscine was walking with his parents and their encounter with three religious leaders, when Piscine found a green island and found teeth from a tree, and when he met another starving survivor on the broad waters of the sea. Curious now? Read the book, you won't regret it!

In other words...

I wish every book were as interesting and as different as Life of Pi. If you know any, we'd all love to hear any suggestions you have. In the meantime, what would you do with a Bengal tiger in your lifeboat?
