The answer to the question posed above is "NO." Money does not buy happiness. But remember neither does poverty. Most of us are about as happy as we make our minds up to be.
Given the choice I'd rather be happy with money than without.
Money doesn't change you. All money does is "reveals who you are when you no longer have to be nice." Timothy Ferriss in The Four Hour Workweek.
This is one of the most accurate descriptions of money I have ever heard.
You can see proof of that by all the millionaire celebrities - music stars or movie stars - who have everything most of us would ever want ruining their lives and careers with stupid choices.
While we've all done our fair share of stupid moves, lucky for most of us ours don't end up on You Tube or the evening news for the whole world to mock us.
Having worked in the film industry at times I've always found it was funny that the ones who have achieved a high level of success, two of the bigger ones were Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson, were some of the more pleasant people to work with.
Some of the not so successful ones who shall remain nameless weren't. There are exceptions of course. Some of the not so famous actors were great people to work with, while some hugely successful ones can sometimes be nightmares.
Anyone who is old enough to have watched NHL hockey since 1980 will surely remember how Wayne Gretzky acted. He is pretty much the definition of "professional." Always giving credit to his team mates, passing the puck to one in the 1988 Stanley Cup Final so that player can have the thrill of getting a hat trick.
And then you see the way some of the players act today. Well, not so professional.
Those who have no accomplishments, who should bow to Gretzky's feet, acting like Prima Donna's.
Most likely everyone knows who I mean
So when anyone tells you that money is the root of all evil and point to those who were corrupted by money, tell the truth. Evil or bad intentions were probably already in that person's mind they just now have the opportunity to do it now that they have money.
This follows along the same line that anyone can handle adversity to truly see someone's character give them power. Money does provide power.
While not the most important thing, it allows us to the things that are important to us.
Love this article. Most people view the "rich" in a negative light or put them on a pedestal. Money does allow you to live better. Some people are changed by it, other are not.
Great article Ian. Although there are some very unhappy rich people out there, there are also some very unhappy and stressed people out there. I personally think that money can facilitate happiness in that you may get to experience things that you may never have with money, and having adequate amount of money eliminates one of the single largest stress points in relationships and in life, debt. In saying this, what defines rich. If you ask a lot of millionaires out there (I think I read a survey on this recently), I believe 60% of people worth over a million dollars were still worried about money. It is all relative.
