Many Children Now Get $3 From The Tooth Fairy

It is hard to believe, but it is now common for children to get $3.00 when they put a tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy. When I was a child, I remember getting a quarter.

I was always so excited whenever I had a loose tooth. I knew it was going to come out any day, and then I would be able to put it under my pillow. Since it was difficult (and often painful) to eat with a loose tooth, I wanted it out. I could not bring myself to hook it to a string, tie the string around a doorknob, and then shut the door, however. That sounded too painful. Instead, I wiggled them. I would wiggle a tooth while watching television or while reading a book, for example. I wiggled it and wiggled it, until it finally came out. Very excited, I would go show my mom. Then I would put it under my pillow for the tooth fairy. Children are unlikely to save their money. Usually, they spend it on items like candy and toys.

It would have been interesting if the me of thirty years ago could have met with the me of today. We would have talked, and I would have told her to save her money. I would have told her that I would be wanting to go to New York City to audition for "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and that I would start collecting dolls. Six dollars would help. I would also treasure hunt every parking lot I went to. At the grocery store and at the mall, for example, I would walk up and down the rows of parking spaces, watching the ground to see what I might find. Then, when the sun found a coin, the coin would shine. I would then walk over and pick it up.

Attention, readers: If you have children who are losing teeth, you may want to sit down with them and have a talk. Ask them what they plan to do with their money from the tooth fairy. If they plan to use it to buy something that they really want, such as a toy that they saw advertised on television, they can earn the rest of what they need. By earning the money, they will know what it is like to work. The toy that they buy will also be more special to them. Rather than enjoying it for a few days while it is new and then putting it away and forgetting about it once the newness has worn off, they will enjoy it longer.

One thing they might do is walk neighborhood dogs. That way, they will get out of the house, get some fresh air and exercise, and be able to bond with man's best friend. However, if the dog is as big as they are, they may want to find another way to earn money.

Talk with them about how they can earn money. Then, work together to help them make their dreams happen.
