Simple care advice for a healthier and happier betta fish.
Betta fish (fighting fish)
Betta fish are commonly known as fighting fish, or siamese fighting fish.
Betta fish in captivity often only live a few months because people dont no how to care for them properly and just think there any easy fish with no requirements. Almost all dieseases that these fish can contract can be sorted out and cured!
One of the most common stories that goes with betta fish are that they can be kept and live in tiny pint size tanks. This however is not true and should not be done! The main reason being:
- How can such a beautiful fish be given no swimming space?
- How can the water conditions be kept good enough when there will be a lack of all chemicals needed for a stable environment?
- Its no quality of life for any type of fish to be kept in a tiny tank with no swimming space, although its onl a fish its still cruel! Just imagine if you was to live in a box just big enough to stand in and reach each wall....
A betta fish needs at least a 5/10 gallon tank (if its male, read below for male requirements) with good filtration and aeration and a heater as this keeps the quality of water much higher! With this information and weekly water changes this will be the foundation of a healthy and longer living betta.
Although Betta fish like minimal water movement you can still cater to the needs of healthy water.
Healthy male betta fish
ONLY keep ONE male in any tank preferably on his own or with some compatible fish. Please note bettas are tail nippers!
Like i said above. keep any betta fish in a filtrated and aerated tank. Even if your only wanting just one male on its own you will still need a decent sized tank, none of these stupid pint sized things. You will also need gravel and plants( preferably live ones) as this adds to the water quality.
Male bettas are honestly one of the most beautiful fish in the tropical section as there various colour patterns are incredible. The flare of the tail is also somewhat admirable! check out the picture of the betta fish!
Female Betta
Female Betta fish are far more sociable than the males. Unlike males these fish can live with each other often in mass numbers! If keeping more than 1 female betta fish together you will require more than one hiding place as they will like there own spot to hide from others in. These females will thrive in the average community tank with gravel plants, filtration and aeration and a heater.
Food
What you feed your bettas is important as this will give your bettas a better and most cases a healthier and longer life.
You should feed your betta a combination between tropical flakes, special betta food and live food such as blood worms and daphnia.
I hope that this simple Betta fish care guide should help you keep your betta living healthier and longer.
