Feeding Tropical Fish

One of the most important requirements when you are keeping a tropical fish tank is feeding. This is an area overlooked by many of us who partake in the fantastic pastime of tropical fish keeping.

Feeding tropical fish is not be taken lightly as the practice of just lugging in some cheap flakes from the local aquatics retailer is not enough. So many people once they setup their tank and finally have fish in it think that is it. A few flakes now and again and they are happy or more often too many flakes and then that is it literally. Sometimes I say to people a hungry fish is a happy fish and in a sense that is true but one still needs to get the balance right. That means the right food for the right fish species. Meaning not only the makeup of the food but also the correct nutritional values.

There are thousands of fish food brands most of which come in the major types and some specialize in a type. The main types are as follows:

Dried Foods - A mainstay for most fish keepers

Frozen or Live - As treats and for carnivorous fish species

Most of the time the various types and brands come in different packing ( colors and shapes ).

Once you satisfied you have the correct food the next thing when it comes to feeding tropical fish is how often and how much. Under feeding is preferable. For a basic community tank I recommend a pinch of flake in the morning and maybe a bit of frozen in the evening. Always try to give your fish a balanced and varied diet. Of course to feed your fish correctly you must know if they are omnivore, carnivore, herbivore or insectivore. Then get a suitable selection of the fish food you will need.

It is also a good thing to know at what time of day your fish are active. It is no good feeding a fish at midday when it is most active at dawn. It will more than likely ignore the food. Often when your fish will not feed it is you who are to blame. You could be feeding your fish food of the wrong size or type.

As you can see from these few notes on feeding tropical fish it is a very important part of having a healthy tank with healthy fish. I stress again not enough people take heed of this important part of the hobby.
