How to Choose the Correct Fish Tank Water Filters For Aquarium

So you have decide to take up the tropical fish hobby. There are few important things you must first know. There are a few items that you must pick up in order to maintain a healthy aquarium. One item being a fish tank water filter. When choosing fish tank water filters, it is important to pick the correct filter for the type of aquarium set up that you have. Choosing the correct filter can save you lots of time money and headache. The filter is the most important item that you will purchase for your aquarium. With that being said, knowing how to take care of your aquarium is important before you go out and purchase any fish.

Before you get started, you should first pick a first tank that fits your style. If you're just starting out, I would recommend that you start off with a smaller aquarium first. First of all, they are less expensive and to there will not be as much maintenance to deal with. This way you could take care of maintaining the important things in your aquarium. When ever you feel comfortable taking care your small aquarium, you can always upgrade to a larger one.

The filter is the life line of the aquarium. It removes impurities from the water by way of mechanical, biological or chemical filtration. Some filters provide all three methods of filtration. I prefer these types of filters as they are easy to set up and maintain.

  • Mechanical Filtration removes impurities by way of some sort of filter floss or filtering particles.
  • Biological Filtration involves the use of beneficial bacteria to break down ammonia and nitrates which is harmful to fish.
  • Chemical Filtration involves utilizing a medium such as activated charcoal for example to filter out unwanted dissolved waste matter in the water.

A new beginners aquarium kit is most likely to come with an under gravel filter. I would say that an under gravel filter is a type of biological filter. It pulls water that is rich in oxygen down through the gravel filtering out any solid waste material. If you're starting out with a small aquarium, you could always opt to use a sponge filter. Sponge filters are easy to set up and maintain.

It is very important that you set up biological filtration in your aquarium before you introduce any fish into it. Failing to do so will result in dead fish. There are also hang on filters that you can purchase that hang on the back of your aquarium and these type of filters provide all three methods of filtration. They are easy to set up and maintain and are the most widely used in today's aquarium.

I hope this information has shed some light on helping you choose the correct filter for your aquarium.
