Saltwater Aquariums - Setting Up And Maintenance

Aquariums in your home can be an amazing showcase for you and anyone who visits your home. Deciding which one you want (saltwater or tropical) can be a hard decision as keeping any type of fish/ aquarium should be a long term commitment.

Most people who havnt kept fish before often choose a tropical aquarium as they are relatively low maintenance fish depending.

Usually for the more experienced fish keepers they often choose to go for the saltwater aquarium. This is because these set ups come with a greater variety of fish and other things such as coral, crustacean and plants.

The sheer beauty of the fish and the amazing amount of choice and colour you can get in a saltwater aquarium is enough to draw anyone in even the newest hobbyist. Having any saltwater fish in your living room would be a beautiful and well thought of addition.

The cost of setting up an aquarium is somewhat small compared to the cost of the fish for saltwater aquariums. So if you want a saltwater aquarium but dont have a generally high budget i would suggest buying a smaller tank and getting top quality equipment since nearly all saltwater fish and invertebrates are captured in the wild there are greater risks associated with handling and shipping. The risks, shipping and collecting costs, and supply-and-demand also make saltwater specimens more expensive as the average price of these fish is £15-£30 which i think you can agree with me is alot compared to the £1.99 each for a tropical fish! However dont let this put you off because even with a low budget you can get a beautiful set up for anywhere in your home.

Setting up and maintaining your saltwater tank isnt much diffeent to tropical tanks because you still need a filter, heater, and lighting. You will need to maintain a constant water temperature always in both tanks. You also still need to maintain all the equipment like you would on a tropical tank and also do the weekly/ fortnightly water changes. (10-20%). Saltwater aquariums will usually require sand as a substrate or live rock and coral depending on what fish and inhabitants you are keeping. Each ones have different requirements. Maintaining your aquarium is a very important aspect of fish keeping as this determines how healthy and chemically balanced your tank will be. Ideally the larger the aquarium the more chemically balanced it will be which also means the wider choice of fish you will have as you will have more space and better conditions. Although saltwater tanks are in my opinion the most beautiful tanks you can get, you can often make a tropical tank look superbly gorgeous all the same. However the need for water testing in a saltwater tank is far greater than that of a tropical tank. You have to make sure that the PH and Salt levels are adequate and there are also other aspects you would need to check.

Hopefully this has answered a few of your questions on saltwater aquariums!
