Tropical Fish Tank Filters

All fish tanks today come with a filter. If it does not have a filter at least find out if you can buy one separately to fit the tank. If not, do not buy the tank. A fish is a pet which you are obligated to look after like any other pet and a tank without a tropical fish tank filter is not good for the health of the fish.

To further illustrate what I mean imagine a room with several people and all the doors and windows closed and no air conditioning. After a while it would get uncomfortable and then unbearable and very unhealthy. The same can be said of a fish tank with several fish and no filter. Conditions become really unhealthy for the fish and plants and eventually they will die a slow and horrible death.

The type and filtration output of your filter is something that should be determined at the outset. Most tanks come with a filter but may not always be adequate for what you may require. If you are intending to have a very well planted tank with a lot of fish then you would need a higher filtration rate then if you had just a rocky scene. I always like to go for what I call over kill when I buy a filter. Better to have good filtration than not enough, makes sense to me.

Many tropical fish tank filters utilize the nitrogen cycle. Very basically this is when waste pollution is processed back into less harmful and useful forms. This process actually occurs in the natural environment and is necessary to support life in water. This process occurs continuously so it stands to reason one needs to keep ones filter running at all times. Only turning it off for short periods for maintenance and when cleaning your tank or doing a small water change.

There are many types of filters in all shapes and sizes. Which can be confusing to say the least. You get the type fixed inside the lid of the tank. There is what I call a stick on filter which you will probably purchase separately to a tank. This filter has suckers which stick it to the inside of the tank in a position you choose. There are canister filters also called external filters which are exactly that, separate to the tank and under gravel filters which go under the gravel in the tank. There are other tropical fish tank filters but I think for the beginner anyway the ones I have mentioned are enough.

With tropical fish tank filters there are two main methods or processes of filtration:

There is much more on tropical fish tank filters but here I hope to have given you the reader and idea of what they are about. Happy fish keeping!!!
