6 Tools For Fly Tying – Tie Your Own Flies

There is nothing more satisfying than catching a fish on a fly you have personally created and tied. Can you imagine the thrill you will experience when after casting your special fly a bass or trout strikes? As you become a more practised fly fisher, you will probably want to experiment using flies that you have created for specific circumstances.

You may find it necessary to get some of the special tools listed which will enable you, with a little bit of practise, tie a really good fly.

1) Lever Operated Vice

This is the most important tool you will need and must be number one on your list. They are made to fit most work benches and tables.

Most medium priced vices have strong metal jaws that are able to grip big and small hooks very firmly. A lever operated vice is the preferred choice because it allows the fly-tyer to apply the correct pressure required.

2) Scissors

Having a good pair of fine-pointed ever sharp scissors that you can use to cut or trim fine fibres is also an important tool. Many fly-tyers have 2 pairs, one for cutting tougher materials and one for doing the fine trimming.

3) Hackle Pliers

You use these pliers to grip hackles and other fine materials between its rubber covered jaws for winding. The plies prevent you from damaging fine materials that do occur when you use your fingers.

4) Spigot Bobbin Holders

Bobbin holders help the fly-tyer to apply the tying thread. It also, because of its weight, keeps sufficient tension when left hanging thereby preventing the thread from unravelling.

When choosing a bobbin holder make sure you select one with a ceramic tube. The smooth and very hard ceramic tube prevents the thread from being damaged.

5) Whip-Finish Tool

If you are a bit ham handed like me or have fat fingers, then you will find this tool a godsend. By using it’s sprung metal arms it becomes a simple task to complete the fly with a whip finish.

6) Dubbing Needle

This small tool is used for freeing any trapped fine fibres, teasing out fur or man-made fabrics, for dubbing and applying varnish.

Fly tying can be a really satisfying fun hobby where you can let your imagination run riot. Has the perfect fly already been invented? Who knows, but I doubt it. Fishing would be a pretty boring sport

if you knew that every time you cast your lure or fly a fish will strike. It is the not knowing when the next big one will bite that keeps us captivated and coming back for more.
