A Fishing Nut

I've learned so much from watching television and reading magazines, not sure where I would be without them. They were not only entertainment; they were much more, so much more they captivated my every thought.

To see the images of these wonders of nature, the spectacular stunning acrobatics of the smallmouth not to be outdone by the antics of the northern pike when they take flight it is a genuine wonder.

I learned the basics from my father but the show and the magazines really took me to the next level, a fishing nut. Yeah, I am the guy that has the fish pens and pillow covers, and fish pictures on his wall instead of wallpaper, maps, books and now URLs, anything fishing.

I never started this way of course, I was like most folks and just put on a worm, bobber and tossed in the water waiting for the bite. Hey many times it worked great and I caught all kinds of fish, then many times it was just a good day out, but no fish.

That’s when I knew I have to know more about what I am doing if I want to catch fish on a consistent basis, then the shows and the magazines filled my every being with wanting more knowledge of the fish species I was seeking, the largemouth bass.

I was obsessed with everything largemouth, the baits, best hooks, which line is best, and fishing the weeds became a sport in its self, it still is. Learning different techniques for certain times of the year, which baits work best, what equipment is needed; I was drawn in to the world of fishing.

Of course there was more than enough information and I was purchasing a new magazine subscription every year, wow I have a lot of magazines.

Red Fisher was the first show I remember watching, and yes even though it was a bit lame to today’s standard it kept me glued to every word for the entire half hour, Scuttlebutt Lodge never forget that.

All of a sudden I needed more information their movement their feeding habits, I wanted to know everything about largemouth bass, and I’m still learning, always more to learn.

I noticed in time I was getting better, not as many days on the water without fish caught, it was working. My obsession was starting to show promise I really understood where and what I was fishing with and it is rewarding me with more catches more fun.

Fishing nut or not, watch the shows or read the articles or not, if you want to become a better angler and catch more fish knowing your fish will increase your success, guaranteed.

My wife doesn't mind my obsession she says it keeps me easy to live with, can’t agree more.

Grab your rods and let’s go fishing…

Street Talk

There is more to fishing than catching fish, and that means a lot of recon, reading, watching and talking to like minded people to give yourself that edge over the fish. Over the past several years I have grown my knowledge on fishing techniques especially fly fishing and love it when I get to the river and a trout takes my fly. That's what it is all about in the end of the day!
