Best Hooks For Bass Fishing

If you have experience as a bass fisher person then you probably also have some experience in the different types of hooks that are available for you to use as well.  The thing is even experienced you can probably still learn something and whats even better that as a novice this will help you with some hook choices.  So now is a good opportunity to learn about different bass hooks and their uses.

Off Shank Hooks

When we talk off shank hooks we are talking about a hook that is best used with baits that are artificial.  The top of the hook where the line gets tied is featured with a bend.  The bend is exactly how these are built and their is a purpose.  When you set the hook because of the bend the hook part will automatically turn into the fishes mouth when the hook is being set.  This is very important because bad sets can make a big difference in the numbers of fish you end up catching.  Of course using normal hooks work but you will catch greater numbers of bass with an off shank.  You will notice more consistant results in almost all cases.

Straight Shank Hooks

When it comes to using live bait you want to focus on using straight shank hooks.  Minnows are a prime example of what we call live bait.  The design of a staright shank allows the live bait to be moved in natural motions.  Everything looks just as it should.  The bait can swim.  Because the bait can swim you will know it is doing the job that we set it out to do.  The fish will always be attracted to bait fish swimming around them.  The bass that sees it will inhale it.  This in turn allows us to set the hook and almost always catch the fish in the mouth which makes for a very clean catch.

Super Sharpened Shank

The next one we talk about is super sharpened shank hooks.  These work really well when it comes to using artificial bait.  With a super sharpened shank you can have the bait up higher on the hook.  With the bait higher you stand a better chance of a good set.  Because the fish have to bite higher they usually stay on better.

Every type of hook you use for bass fishing turns out to be unique.  They in many cases can be used in different ways.  The nice thing as a bass fisher person is you have a lot of choices.  As an individual it is ultimately up to you to decide what is working best for you.  It comes down to doing your homework and using what works and what you prefer.

Outsmarting Savvy Bass

In some cases like fishing spots that get fished a lot bass now are learning to know what is food and what is a hook.  They are getting smart enough to figure out certain types of hooks.  The biggest thing to do in cases like this is hide the hooks as much as you can inside the baits you are using.  It is your job as a fisher person to be smarter then the bass fish you are going after.  The problem is you are hovering in their turf so they are comfortable being at home.  Being comfortable also usually means they are confident.  The bass fish know better then anyone else what kind of bait are in the waters so its your job to keep your bait as close as possible.  For these reasons you do need to be picky when it comes to choosing hooks and baits.  As soon as a fish recognizes a hook they will be gone for good.  Also if you dont bait the hook properly some smart fish will even be smart enough to steal the bait right off the hook.  Good fisher people will always be up to the challenge of understanding how the bass fish are acting on certain days.

The key as you will always hear from me is to keep on fishing.  If you get frustrated and give up because of a bad day then you really dont understand fishing.  Catching a fish is the ultimate goal but having fun is almost at the same level.

Hi Great article. Most anglers think a hook is just a hook but as you pointed out there is a lot more to it than just putting on a pisce of bait. You have also got to be sneaky.
