Fly Fishing Vest Buyers Guide

Fly fishing vests are an iconic piece of gear often attached to the sport. Rarely will you see a fly fisherman without a fly fishing vest on while on the water. They are very useful and helpful for a mobile fisherman, especially when the fisherman is wading in the river or stream, or in a float tube on a lake. Consider a fly fishing vest a tackle box that can be worn.

There are many different kinds of fly fishing vests on the market. There are lightweight mesh vests that are great for hot summer fishing. There are also vests that are integrated onto a rain jacket. These vest jackets will keep you dry and warm in colder, rainy climates. Recently, there has been a surge in production and purchasing of fly fishing chest packs. These packs sometimes convert into backpacks or hip packs, and are much more compact than a vest.

There are many brands and models of fly fishing vests on the market, so many that they have even crossed over into other types of fishing. Even bass fishermen can use a vest to store little tackle boxes of fishing lures while on the go.

The first thing you will need to determine is if you want a vest or a pack. If you choose a vest there are a few configurations to look at. Will you be fishing in mostly warm climates or cold climates? This will determine whether you will go with a mesh vest, cotton/poly vest, or vest-jacket. Once you have determined which type of vest you want, you will then need to compare prices between different brands. Orvis, L.L. Bean, Simms, and Fishpond all make great products, but they are a little pricey. Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops will offer lower cost substitutes that will accomplish the same thing.

Redington makes a high quality vest that comes in mesh or cotton/poly for under $30. Like all of the products Redington produces, the quality of construction is high and the price is low. Simms has a variety of vests available, but they are in the $60-$120 range. Fishpond makes chest packs primarily, but they also have a hybrid vest-chest pack that features a hydration bladder and several front pockets. These models range in price from $140 to $220.

This has been a fly fishing vest buyers guide. Make sure you shop around for the best deal. And remember that the more organized you are on the water, the longer you will be able to fish without having to return to your vehicle. Happy fishing!
