My Crappie Secret

Want to know my secret to catching Crappie's?

I had to take the time to learn HOW to best crappie fish!

Crappie fishing tips came from influences like my Dad, brothers, uncles and books that I took the time to read. In fact, I didn't get really good at catching crappie until I studied and read about how these voracious eating creatures think. How confident am I now? Very!

I can pretty much size up a new lake by looking at lake depth charts, confirm on my GPS and fish finder and be on Crappies in a relatively short period of time. But, that didn't come haphazardly. I had to learn how.

When I was growing up we had a family friend by the name of Rollie. This guy from central Wisconsin could go anywhere it seemed, and pull in the nicest stringer of crappies I can ever remember. Growing up I was amazed at his ability and skill to out fish the rest of us on any given day. I mean, we were the regulars on the lake. We lived there! We knew, or thought we knew, where all the “good” spots were. And yet, Rollie could come prancing in for a short visit and fish in places we never considered and haul in the big ones. I’ll never forget that!

Now that I am much older and more reflective, I learned that I needed to work at my craft to learn the best crappie fishing secrets. And so it began.

I read books, magazines, newspapers, anything I could get my hands on.

And then I put my newly learned tactics to work. In other words, I took action and slowly but consistently, I got better.

So, for today’s first crappie fishing tips of-the-day? Start reading!

Crappie Fishing Tip #2

Fish where the fish are.

Sounds obvious, right? How many times have you put a line in the water, HOPING that fish were nearby? I have and more times than I care to disclose. Of course, there is a catch to finding where the fish are. You have to have something that tells you where the fish are, so electronics come into play.

There are a ton of electronic fish finder devices on the market today. And the quality is outstanding. I mean, My God! I think we'll be able to count how many scales a fish has at 30 feet. Right?

I don't have an HD fish finder yet. But, it is on my list.

One of the tricks I learned in reading my simple Eagle fish finder is to look for schools of fish at the same depth. Crappies in particular travel in packs or schools of fish. Look for schools of fish showing up stacked side by side and I'll bet your minnow that you're looking at a school of Crappies.

Crappie Fishing Tip #3

Crappie's love movement. That's right, keep 'er moving. In the summertime, I'll drift with the wind or troll slowly. In the winter, I'll move my bait up and down while frequently wiggling, rest, then wiggle or move some more.

Crappie fishing is fun and exciting. The action is great when the fish are hungry. And following these tips WILL put more fillets on your table. Of course, you could also hire crappie fishing guide. But then……..

Guess there’s a life lesson in that- Learn and apply what you learned!
