Rare Fishing Opportunity

Are you ready for spring fishing. Well if not you better get ready. It’s now March 14th and the weather forecast for the next ten days is for temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s. That will be enough to start the spring walleye migration and spawn.

Great news if you’re ready. Unfortunately we are not ready. We have a 27’ Sportcraft offshore that is kept in a boathouse. Normally it would not go in the water until the first or second week of April. We are scrambling to get it ready to go in the water now. With a little luck we can have it in by the last week in March.

Where are you with your spring fishing preparations? If you fish from an inboard that is still on the blocks you are in the same spot as we are. If you’re fishing from an outboard on a trailer you should be in great shape to take advantage of this rare early fishing opportunity.

I have been following the local fishing reports and the fish are definitely on the move. Walleye are being caught in the Sandusky and Maumee rivers, Sandusky Bay and the Lake Erie reefs just offshore from Port Clinton. The reports I am getting about Sandusky Bay indicate that walleye are being caught in the area around the Route 2 bridge over the bay.

Even if you don’t have a boat, you can get in on this fishing. You can fish from the old bridge just adjacent to the new bridge. A lot of fish are caught from that area during the spring walleye migration. This is a great fishing area with parking and rudimentary restroom facilities. The bridge can be accessed from Bayview, Ohio.

If you are going to launch anywhere from Sandusky to Toledo make sure you call ahead to confirm the launching ramps are open. Fishermen aren’t the only ones caught napping by this weather. Call around to make sure you find a bait store that is not only open but has what you need. The ones I have checked are just starting to have shiner minnows and nightcrawlers.

One thing we can do is find a buddy that has a boat ready for the water. With the price of marina gas approaching the $6.00 range I’m sure most guys would love to have someone to share expenses with. Do whatever you have to do because these opportunities don’t come along very often.

Thanks for the comment Kevin. I used to work with two brothers from the New Orleans area. I always wanted to fish with them but never had the chance
